Help! Any dentists around?

I'm away on holiday and have broken a tooth, the inside part of a bottom molar. There's a pretty big filling in the tooth and it's snapped so that the side of the filling is now the edge of my tooth iyswim.

It's not (currently) painful but is sensitive and I'm not eating on that side of my mouth if I can help it.

I can get an emergency dental appointment this afternoon, or wait till next week (weds) when we get home and see my usual dentist. Is it likely to get worse between now and next week? Ie am I likely to cause problems with the filling or anything like that by leaving it a few days?

It should be fine, do you have regular check ups? If there is decay in the tooth it's more likely to cause problems but if it's been looked at fairly recently then a simple fracture is unlikely to get worse.

Is it more sensitive to hot or cold and how long does the sensitivity last when you get it?

Happened to me recently (my husband was away so child care was a huge problem) so full sympathy.

I would go and get either a temp filling or a dressing to protect it for a week. Then drink with a straw and eat on the other side of the mouth and up my oral care to after I eat and drink.

Teeth completely freak me out so I always go for overkill.

Another dentist here .

If it's not hurting I'd say leave it till you can see your normal dentist. You'd probably just get a repair as an emergency, which might help if it were sore or hurting your tongue / cheek, but won't make it any stronger. Without seeing it I couldn't comment on what the permenant options might be.

You can call me swann Morton. It's not my name but I quite like it!!

Thanks. It's not hurting, and the sensitivity only lasts while something is actually against the filling, as far as I know the rest of the tooth is in ok condition other than the existing filling and broken bit! The edge is smooth so it's not rubbing or anything.

I've made an appointment for first thing the day after we get home, hopefully it'll be ok until then, I've asked for a 30 min appt as I think it'll need a crown Hmm

Transient sensitivity is a good sign. ie. it's just sensitive, nowt else going on.

Enjoy your holiday!!
