been to new dentist 1st time 10 years other day severe dental phobia

says i have really bad advanced gum disease.

up until recently my gums were red and bled but not sore

im taking max painkillers i can
brushing 1times a day
usng cordysol last 2days.
tried flossing last few months and inter dental brushes that causing bleeding and ot reoving everything.

i know i need scale and polishes
i hate the new dentist felt really uneasy so need to register elsewhere.
They saying I need least 3-4 scale and cleans i not sure can cope with that.
I asked about sedation but they said only at hospital

could they clean in 1go under general?
i so stressed and upset over it.

since taking antibiotics doesnt feel better n fact teeth dont feel clean and gums feel sore feels better wen im brushing so if in pain i go brush my teeth.gums feel bit weepy.

been putting bonjela on gums not sure that helps

frein said get a scraper an try scrape away visible plaque.

I know need professional help but in mean time

will full course antibiotics and cordysol work?

whats best painkiller combing ibuprophen as thourght that reduce swelling and co-codamel.

can you recceomend reasonably priced toothbrush and toothpaste.

Just thinking need to get some relief from pain an less sore plus need to reregister with dentist, not sure what dental hospital wait is an phyche myself up.

I know im in bad way and commiteed to fixing it.

ironically my teeth are fine
i always brushed twice a day
gums got worse since kids

new dentist made me feel awful.
my teeth are not wobbly i do need one fillng as lost one.

I think theres going to be delay in seeing the right people so want to help myself at home.

chin up OP ,you're not alone .

I think mine are described as significant bone loss .Personalliy I think there is waaay too little advice about protecting one's gums .
And I distinctly remember being told by a dentist years ago that if my gums bleed to brush them longer and harder .

Anyhow ,long thread here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/733570-severe-gum-disease that you might pick up some tips on .

Mainly I've learnt

never brush within an hour of eating

always brush first thing on getting up

use those interdental brushes

I hate having my teeth scaled and polished as well - would rather have a root filling .
Short of begging GP for a couple of Diazepam or lorazepam ( worth asking ) you could try applying sensitive tooth paste neat around gums night before and on morning ,it's supposed to help .

Remember there's lots of us in same boat and try not to feel so guilty .

Oh and change your dentist to one you feel comfortable with if you can .

Good luck .

Thanks gingeroots could take couple weeks to register with new dentist.

unsure how long dental hospital be they really are best place for me.

guess will keep gp as emergency option.

but at moment short term

want to stop the pain as made me super grumpy,

im avoiding anythng sugary
brush obsessivly.
wil the antibiotics and cordysol make it better short term as day 3 and feel no better.

im taking silly amounts painkillers

The dentist the other day was very weird and made me feel like worse case she ever seen very short and dismissive.

I cant possibly go back there she dident care was all about the money.

I have no idea why its suddenly got so bad.
want to do all i can to solve it

i did few searches and got some ideas

I'm not a dentist and given that I have bad gums I'm not sure if best placed to advise ,but ...

stop brushing obsessively

make sure you don't use cordysl straight after brushing - apparently the toothpaste stops it working

Have you been referred to a dental hospital or just hoping to be ?
I don't think they will give a GA for scale/clean etc .

With so much pain I'm guessing infection and assuming you're on AB .
Yes I think if you lay off the brushing ,flossing and clean very gently and use interdental brushes gently and cordysl ,it will improve .

Hope someone else comes along to help .

I feel as if need to get the pain and inflamation under control
get teeth as clean as I can
and pluck up courage to go 1st
then dont know how long will have to wait

so need some short term fixes at home to help me before treatment

when im in pain when atually brushing it doesnt hurt
gums not seem to be bleeding as much
just red and inflamed and sore.

my teeth are no way lose
can see visible plaque esurface on gaps cant get out with flossing and interdental

find the wire intredental brushes horrod on teeth

using colgate toothpaste
manual brushes
floss and mouthwash

as well as taking antiobiotics which making me feel crap feel blueurh and still in pain. I know its only 3days have 7day supply 3 aday.

what will the antibiotics actually do?

will they help treat infection i guess i must have?

is it the gum isease making them sddenly sore or fact i have an infection?

evil dentist was not clear and gave me looks of disgust.

My Son is a 5th yr dental student. He said you'd be better off either going along to the local dental hospital or seeing a community dentist, as they are specialists in anxiety management within the profession. They will be able to help you to reduce your anxiety towards dentists - taking it at your pace. Scale & polish is not something they would do under GA, due to risks of GA.
Corsodyl shouldn't be used for longer than 5 days. Corsodyl daily can be used for up to 2 weeks. Don't brush more than 3 times a day, as will cause trauma and further inflammation of the gums. Floss once a day. Might be helpful to google correct brushing and flossing techniques. Good luck.

gingeroots · 08/08/2013 18:35

OP -yes I'm sure soreness is due to infection which antibiotics should clear .
Mumof3teens gives good advice .

Mrsmorton · 08/08/2013 20:22

Antibiotics won't clear the infection until you have your teeth cleaned I'm afraid. The plaque/calculus on there is acting as a constant source of infection, until it's removed then the bleeding will continue.

i have another dentists appointment tuesday

diffrent dentst, diffrerent practice.

I cant self refer to dental hospital needs a dentist to do that for me.

felt bit yuck today not just teeth not sure if painkillers or antibiotics but had dummy ache.

will try an brush less.

they no longer bleeding when i brush like they did last week.

i think it must be the infection that caused the gum pain.

ho9ping if take the course taht gives me some respite until next week.

i got the alchol free corsodyl and says on bottle a course is a month long.

only been brushing so much as have od taste in mouth and relives the pain when im brushing.

tried to cut back on pain killers this afternoon.

havent been in as much pain this afternoon but early mornings and when i get up its really painful

was hoping the ibuprohen ease the gum swellng too.

thanks for all the advice.

If your gums bleed, you need to brush them more not less. The build up of plaque causes a very localised infection (gingivitis). This causes tiny ulcers in your gums and when you brush, these ulcers bleed. Once the plaque is removed, the ulcers heal (usually within a day) and the bleeding will go away.

When you have hard deposits on your teeth (tartar/calculus) then you can't clean this off with a toothbrush, it needs to be removed by a dentist or a hygienist. This traps web more plaque and causes the infection to be worse, once the infection gets to a certain level, the bone surrounding your teeth starts to resorb and this becomes more severe gum disease which will eventually lead to loss of teeth.

You could ask your dentist for some sedatives to take by mouth prior to any treatment. Every PCT I have ever worked in keeps their community services for children and adults with severe learning or physical disabilities who would find treatment in a high street practice impossible. Competent and able bodies adults are highly unlikely to get treatment under GA.

ukatlast · 09/08/2013 16:00

You should insist on being numbed up for the cleaning, then at least you don't have pain during to worry about.
Mrsmorton in some areas dental phobics are within the remit of the Salaried Dental Services.
