Try an antihistamine syrup. Piriton and Zirtek are available for chidren.Piriton is quite sedating though but Zirtek isn't. Both available over the counter!

I wasnt sure if they could take them without presription. I quite often try and get stuff over the counter and get sent to docs.

My DD gets hayfever and has done each year since being tiny. She is now 4yo. She gets gets very sniffly mnore than anything, ad gets red weepy eyes.

I have tried pririton, but it makes her sleepy
I also had some homeopathic (sp?) ones but they were ineffective.
Now trying Benedryl allergy once a day syrup. She has used it past 3 days and seems a little better, but not hugely. Not making her sleepy though.

If you ask your pharmacist they should be able to tell you what is on offer.

Apparantly if you can get hold of local honey and give your DS that it can help.

NO you can get both of these over the counter. I have recently bought Zirtek for DD who is 4. There shouldn't be a problem.

Will try the honey, he doesnt like it though.

Other than making him wear glasses when outside can i do anything preventative other than keeping him in.?

DD doesn't either. When I get hold of some I am going to try it a bit like medicine I think. She will ake her medicines luckily.

It has to be local honey though.

The only Zirtek for children I can find is for 6 years + - is there a younger one?

We get cetirizine anti-histamine liquid on prescription, which DS has every morning in his bottle. This doesn't seem to make him drowsy at all, and had the huge benefit of stopping him from itching when he recently got chicken pox.

We've also got Opticrom eye drops, again on prescription, which you can use all the time (and we did while away on holiday) but I just tend to use when we're going to be at home all day playing in the garden, or when he asks for them, saying his eyes are all "sneezy" - bless!
Once you've got these prescribed, you can just get repeat prescriptions, to avoid trailing down to the doctors every few weeks.
Hope this helps.

The license for Zirtek has recently changed and there are still some bottles with 6+ for sale. The strength and dosage is exactly the same but ask the pharmacist to advise you more.It is now licensed for 2 and over

Thanks LaylaandSethsmum :)

Boots do a loratadine (sp) syrup which i give to my 3 year old. It seems to work

Bozza · 13/06/2006 10:10

I really would take him to the doctor. DS (5) has hayfever quite badly and he has a prescription for a medicine (4x a day) and eyedrops (2x a day). We have filled in a form so he can have the medicine and eye drops at school at lunchtime.

jellyjelly · 13/06/2006 18:28

Thanks all i took him to the doctor and got zirtek on prescription which i have yet to give tonight but hope it works. He has been better today and his rash has gone but think it will come up again soon.
