How much paracetamol (adult) and pain relief over long term?

I have pelvic instability as a result of exercising far too vigorously too soon after having my last baby. Stupid vanity. Now I'm in pain every day, some days I can barely walk. Am seeing a physio 2x per week.
DH is very anti pain relief. Will not even take a single panadol for a headache. He keeps going on at me about taking pain meds. I think I'm well within the safe limits but I'm not sure, as its been about three months now that I've had pain relief every day. Don't want to poison myself, but equally my life is hard work if I'm hobbling around in crippling pain. So, here's what I'm taking: 2 or 3 paracetamol/codeine tablets per day or 1-2 50mg diclofenac tablets. Is that too much, every single day?

No, that's not too much.

Your body is in pain for a good reason, and there's no need for you not to take pain relieving tablets to help with it.

The maximum dose for paracetamol is 8 tablets in any 24 hr period, and diclofenac is 3 tablets in any 24 hrs - you're taking way under that.

Don't forget that pain causes stress to the body; by taking pain relievers you're helping your body to heal itself and it does that a lot faster without the pain.

Your dh is being a bit silly IMO - you could always say to him that for everyday you're in pain (because of his daft ideas re tablets) you can ensure that he is also in pain.... Wink

How many mg per tablet is the question...

Tapirbackrider · 31/07/2013 13:25

Chandras You can't obtain paracetamol tabs in the UK that are above 500mg per tablet; even if the paracetamol/codeine ratio is 500mg/30mg, the daily maximum dosage is still 8 in any 24 hrs.

I had a hip replacement last year and in the 3 months or so leading up to it I was maxing out on iproprofen and paracetalmol. I don't like doing that (usually I hardly touch tablets) but needed it due to the pain (I walked about a mile twice a day to get to work, and stood on train etc). Once I had the op I stopped taking meds within a couple of weeks. No issues.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone. Really reassuring response. I took nothing yesterday and got through the day fine - physio said taking the pain meds was the best thing I could have done because I wasn't compensating for pain by hobbling around (and therefore making my hip and legs muscles worse). Really glad I ignored DH!! Smile

No don't struggle without pain relief. DH takes way way more than you (prescribed). Hope you're on the mend soon

it's not the 16th century. Take the medication, within the safe limits.
