Ungent! Is he ill or just too hot? Advice needed.

9 month ds is really not himself. All weeks he's been eating less and less and today he hasn't eaten at all and drunk very little. He has had half abottle of milk at 3pm.

He's very sleepy, listless and grumpy and very very hot. He was 38degrees C and I've just given him a tepid bath to cool him down. He perked up a bit in the bath but now he's out he's back to just wanting cuddles and grisling. (and he never wants to cuddle now he's discovered crawling)

So do you think it's the heat? And how can I cool him/house down. It's 27degrees in his room with window open and 2 fans, and blinds drawn. He currently has no clothes at all on.

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

HAve you given him calpol?

foxinsocks · 10/06/2006 18:55

he needs fluids - has he had water in addition to his milk? could you spoon some in him?

MarsLady · 10/06/2006 18:56

Lots of fluids. You can alternate Calpol and Ibruprofen. If his temperature doesn't come down you should call the gp.

It may just be the weather, but keep us posted!

PanicPants · 10/06/2006 18:56

He's had calpol about half and hour ago and he's now falling asleep on dp, despite it being tea time and he'd normally be screaming for his tea and bottle by now :(

Although I suppos that could be the calpol.

OP posts:
MarsLady · 10/06/2006 18:57

I'm assuming you've checked for spots etc?

The calpol will probably have helped make him sleepy. Keep a close eye and trust your instincts.

PanicPants · 10/06/2006 19:02

He has been refusing water all day and milk, but I'm now going to syringe it in his mouth

OP posts:
PanicPants · 10/06/2006 19:03

Thanks marslady, yes I've checked for a rash but there isn't one and his hands and feet aren't cold to touch.

OP posts:
MarsLady · 10/06/2006 19:05

Good! Fluids it is then.

I'll check back so any change either way let me know (I know I can't get there or anything, but I'll be thinking of you)

foxinsocks · 10/06/2006 19:05

poor lad - he does sound poorly

maybe his throat is sore (which is why he doesn't want to drink)? keep an eye on him - it's horrible being ill when it is so hot

PanicPants · 10/06/2006 19:08

I forgot to say that every now and again he's shaking. It isn't a fit as he's conscious but a shake/tremour which lasts about a minute or so. I've only noticed it 3 or 4 times since this morning.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 10/06/2006 19:09

like a shiver?

MarsLady · 10/06/2006 19:09

keep a close eye on that. Sometimes with high temps they can get convulsions. Tepid sponging is good and as naked as possible.

sugarfree · 10/06/2006 19:10

That's rigors.Shivering due to his high temp. Keep going with the calpol, fluids and tepid sponging.
Keep us up-to-date when you can.

squarer · 10/06/2006 19:11

I have had a couple of episodes where DS cut down on all the normals of eating and drinking and eventually showed signs of positive illness (i.e. could be diagnosed). So just reinforcing what others have said here... keep him cool and trust your instincts on what is right and what is wrong. Phone NHS direct if in any doubt.

Hope he starts to feel better soon. Its never easy if they have a virus in hot weather.

Do you know not to point the fans directly at them? (If you do, they become too cold and start the shivering process which warms them right back up again)

squarer · 10/06/2006 19:12

Oh, you've all been posting whilst I've been typing!

squarer · 10/06/2006 19:17

My son had a febrile fit PP. It is caused by spiking temperatures rather than just high temperatures. As Mars says you need to keep a close eye (but tepid sponging needs to be limited apparently - and never cold sponging)

PanicPants · 10/06/2006 19:22

I didn't know that about the fans so thanks squarer and we've been bathing him him tepid water not cold.

The shaking isn't a shiver as such but more of a quiver iuswim

We've just woken him to give him his bottle and he's had half of it so I think we'll pop him down to bed now and just keep and eye on him.

PanicPants · 10/06/2006 19:26

Should I put him in his vest to sleep in? Or just a nappy?
All this week we've been putting him in a 1.0 tog growbag with just a nappy on.

Oh and also forgot to mention his nose. He had a cold a couple of weeks ago and all thats left is his constantly running nose. It's streaming at the moment. Don't know if it's conected.

OP posts:
squarer · 10/06/2006 19:30

Could be PP. Just a nappy - nothing else

squarer · 10/06/2006 19:32

I think it was twiglett that said on here "Cold is noisy, hot is dangerous". If he's cold in just a nappy he'll let you know Smile

PanicPants · 10/06/2006 19:48

thanks squarer thats good advice!

OP posts:
PanicPants · 10/06/2006 21:16

He went straight to sleep after drinking most of his bottle and another tepid bath. Will check his temp when we go to bed.

Thanks all xx

OP posts:
squarer · 11/06/2006 09:54

How did you all do last night PP? Smile

PanicPants · 11/06/2006 14:18

He's much much better today thanks squarer. He has eaten and his temp is back to normal. I'm plying him with fluids today and I'm not taking him outside in the sun.

I have to say I was really worried last night as he got so listless so quickly, and with such a high temp. He slept with just a nappy and he's still in just a nappy!!

Thank you for your advice and concern. This is why I love mumsnet!
