Basal Cell Carcinoma - how worried should I be?

I'm not going to google anything. My Dsis has a lump on her face, I didn't like the look of it and pestered her to get it looked at. It's taken a few months but she's finally been and they've said it's Basal Cell Skin Cancer.
They've said it's localised and once removed that's it gone. No further treatment needed, it's very common apparently.

I'm just a bit shocked and disappointed that my instinct was right Sad

Has anyone experienced this? Apparently the wait for the operation could be 6 months.

Secretswitch one of the things DM had removed was a rodent ulcer on her nose. It has left no scar at all.

I copied the following from netdoctor:

It is a skin cancer caused by exposure over many years to ultraviolet radiation of the sun, but it is not invasive and never spreads to other parts of the body.

In this respect it can be considered benign.

These ulcers do however gradually enlarge, nibbling away at tissues at its edge, hence the term rodent ulcer.

I hope that is a bit of comfort!

Thanks worrysighworrysigh! When ever I go for my skin checks I stress very badly. I get so frightened they will find another bcc. My doctor looks between my toes and my crotch. If he ever announces " secrets, you have a rodent ulcer" I will know it has nothing to with Ebola or the Hantavirus..
I love MN.. You get some really excellent information :)

You are welcome!

I too love MN, otherwise I would only have solitaire for company when the insomnia strikes!

I'm still nicking your name when you are not looking.....

ShiftyFades · 30/07/2013 03:31

It definitely wasn't rodent ulcer (I'd remember that) and he assured her it wasn't cancer.
Looks like they often misdiagnose but no real harm done, it just allows them to continue growing a bit longer.
I would rest easy if my poorly DS would let me... Sad

Shifty, I am sorry your ds is ill...nothing worse than sitting through the night with a sick child. You must be exhausted. I am sending tons of healing thoughts to you both..xx

Thank you Smile
DS is still very unsettled and not well Sad
DSis is feeling a lot calmer and reassured. I shall be going along for the biopsy with her.
Just glad she's going to be ok, she is lovely Smile
