I've come to realise that I have bad PMT!!! Sounds stupid but I never really had before the children were born but now I feel completely chronic in the week before and early part of period. It almost feels like a physical pain I feel so down and shitty and well worthless. Can somebody more knowlegeable remind me what is good for this in terms of diet, and B vitamins? I think I need to try something before my family up and leave me...........many thanks.

not too sure about vitamins ect but just wanted to let you know you are not alone i had no pmt before the kids but now i am a total cow the week before and first few days!
My temper just flares and i am starving the week before too.

I know that its good to eat nuts and fruit and try to avoid bad carbs like white bread and pasta

supposedly evening primrose oil (apparently the one with starflower oil added in is best - you'll see it in the chemist) and a general B vit supplement - but you won't see the effects for a number of weeks and even then, you may see none at all (I certainly didn't).

Are you on any contraception? You can see the GP about it - apparently, they have specialist PMS clinics (at some gynae departments at hospitals). Also, there is some research that shows taking a low dose antidepressant helps - they are starting to believe (thought not conclusive) that some people who suffer badly with PMT have a lower level of serotonin and this seems to lead to people being more sensitive to the female hormones. It's all a theory but they have seen some positive results.

Also, the normal stuff like regular exercise, good diet is supposed to help.

oh can i join you?
I become a raging mad thing the week before (again since having kids),and have nearly divorced dh several times now.
I am thinking of going to GP and asking about any tests for hormonal imbalance - are there any do you know? ?

foxinsocks · 08/06/2006 19:29

I had a long chat with a GP friend. She told me that as we get older, we get more sensitive to our hormones so normally it's a case of not producing too much but just reacting to them more. She said she has noticed this herself recently!

I think hormone tests are notoriously inaccurate largely because you have to measure them over time (i.e. over different times in your cycle etc.).

It's definitely worth going to the GP if you are suffering badly though.

Top top tip here - I'm absolutely convinced it is brilliant for PMS. Take the supplement called 'Magnesium OK'. It is the business. Really - try it.

unicorn · 08/06/2006 19:41

will give it a go - anything worth trying!

niceglasses · 08/06/2006 20:08

Thanks for that - i'm quite desperate at the moment so will probably try the lot. Never really suffered before so come as a bit of a shock!!

I had never had a day of PMT in my life till I had the sodding mirena fitted. Even now it is out, I still suffer really badly every month. Tis very annoying and at the moment, I'd quite happily have them chop my womb out!

southeastastra · 08/06/2006 20:24

argh 'chop' ouch!

Kaloo20 · 09/06/2006 14:06

Mirena coil has almost cured my PMT - !

I guess we all have different hormones that need kicking into shape
