Possible Broken Toe - What to do?

FlameBoo · 07/06/2006 23:25

I bashed my little toe on Tuesday morning, and thought it was badly bruised...

It was swollen and hurting still this morning, and had a diagonal purple bruise going across it.

I strapped it up late afternoon/evening and it helped, but have just taken it off now, and it is bigger again, and a nice puce colour Grin

My brain is telling me that there isn't a lot anyone medical can do, but I'm not sure if I should get it checked out by someone what with it still swelling.

So.....

Do I get it checked out, and if so, GP or A&E?

A&E and ask for a stick

are you in the England squad?

LadySherlockofLGJ · 07/06/2006 23:34

ROFL Bear, she could only be an addition at this moment in time. Grin

Grin The England squad would be proud to have me. I kick like a girl (what with being one), so would blend in well!

am serious about the stick - if you don't ask they won't offer and if it's affecting your walking, a astick will make the world of difference

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 07/06/2006 23:41

"a astick?" sorry, been out

FlameBoo · 07/06/2006 23:44

The joys of a&e.... what could be better?

there's always whipping yourself silly with a knotted rope, but generally A&E's much less effort

My mum broke her toe last month. Hospital will strap it up and tell you to stay off it for 48 hours (but nothing else for toes.. not even an xray). Mum didn't stay off hers... she wishes she had.. it still hurts a lot. I think it has healed wrongly. So take heed if you can.

Hmmm.... 14 week old, and 3 yr old, and going to Wales for the weekend on Friday - can't see staying off it happening too well!

You wouldn't think one dog basket could do so much damage!!!!

DD has told everyone she sees though "No close to mummy. Baaaaaaaad toe" Grin

They do very little for broken toes, it's true.

I would keep taping it, keep it up when possible, and take maxdose iboprofen, to reduce inflammation. (Well, maybe not take maxdose if you're bf the 14 week old. Just take some in that case.)

Thankyou for the replies.

Its stopped hurting a lot over night (at least it had until I typed that!!!), and is letting me bend it slightly today. Think I'll tape it up, see how the rest of the day goes, and if needs be get it checked out this evening when DH gets home.

If you have a brak in your little toe it is treated no differently than a sprain IYSWIM. There fore A+E normally dont Xray. They do put a buddy strap on and advice rest ice elevation and that breaks and the like can take up to six weeks to heal. Do go the dr if you feel it is getting worse not better.

MerlinsBeard · 08/06/2006 11:35

I wouldn't go to A & E. They do NOTHING for toes. strap it to the next one and thats it. Unless its your big toe and thats different. You're doing the best thing. try to keep off it today if u can IF and make DH drive 2moro. lots of painkillers and arnica, although not sure what good it will do this late, forgot to tell u last night sorry.
