Severley abnormal smear. Need some reassurance

I'm 24.5 so i've recently had my first smear test last week. The results came in the post today saying i've got severe dyskarosis (sp) and i need a colposcopy. I can't ring up until Monday so i've naturally been panicking all weekend thinking the worst is going to happen, especially since my Mum had cervical cancer aged 34. Has anyone else had severley abnormal results and went on to be treated successfully? I'm so scared, my DS is only 4 months old and i'm imagining worst case scenarios.

I had a smear done in January and I had severe dyskariosis (sp?!). I saw a gynaecologist who saw that it couldn't be treated where it was- they normally treat there and then. I had a quick day surgery trip and had it successfully removed.

It is not cervical cancer, it is a change in cells that could lead to cancer in future, but not necessarily so. I've just had a follow up assessment and the area was clear but I'm awaiting test results.

It is really scary to get the letter but it isn't necessarily very bad.

My son was 11 months and I did cry when I got the letter but I was able to speak to a nurse and the doctor and saw that it wasn't as bad as the letter makes out.

It's fairly common to get results like yours and I know a few people who've had the procedure, and are now fine. Great that they have found this and can treat it, if you hadn't had the smear then the situation might be different, but now the most likely result is they will fix you.

I had the same severe dyskaroasis (sp) I was terrified, imagining the worst as I am sure you are. I had the colposcopy and had to go back for LLETZ treatment. I have since had dc3 and two normal smears. I am on yearly smears now.

I am sure you will be fine. I found the Jo's trust forumn very helpful, it is a cervical cancer website but don't be scared off. You will be amazed by how many people are going through exactly what you are now.

I can understand where you're coming from with a family history like yours, but try not to stress about it until you have more information. I was in a similar situation 4 years ago, the nurse doing the smear apparently saw something "up there" when she was doing it and I was urgently referred even before the smear test result came back. I nearly had a heart attack when I got to hosp and it was the consultant himself I saw rather than a minion, I was imagining the worst. Anyway - having had a look he said nothing to worry about, no need to do a colposcopy or anything else and I have been put back from 6 monthly to annual smears now. Good luck xx
