Underactive thyroid

I've been told today I am hypothyroid. My TSH is 7.38 and free T4 6.8, and my doctor has started me on 50g of thyroxine to start with, to be rechecked in 3 months. She said this is a low dose to begin with, which may be altered depending on a later blood test.

Is this dose going to make any difference? I have MS and suspect that I may have a lot of hypo symptoms that I have been putting down to MS, and it would be nice to feel more energetic. Also this heatwave is the first time I've felt warm since I was abroad last year! Plus I've put on weight which I would very much like to lose.

Has anyone any experience to share? Can I expect to lose weight and feel better soon on such a low dose?

Incidentally, I only found out about my thyroid when I saw a specialist for my MS and he noticed I had a 'full' neck and told me to get tested. I had noticed it in recent photos but just thought I had developed a fat middle-aged neck! Grin

Hi, sorry to her of your diagnosis, but dont panic! I was diagnosed 6 years ago and take 125 a day, started off on 25 which was slowly upped. Took a while to get the diagnosis as I was very young to have the condition, however the medication had almost immediate effect for me - I went from being incredibly lethargic, sleeping 15 hours a day, back to my old self - running daily, partying lots (not so much anymore, getting old) and just generally feeling a lot happier and better in myself. Hopefully this will also be true for you! I am ALWAYS cold though, that has never really improved, but I can live with it. Ask away if any Qs

Thankyou Sweet. Your experience makes me very hopeful, I would love to feel more energetic soon. Smile

Thyroxine helps hugely, took a little while to get my dose right but I feel so much better for it. Hope yours settles down soon.

I've had hypothyroidism for 13 years and am 36 now. Currently on 200mcgs thyroxine and have been for two years, it does get easier - and warmer! Although cold hands and feet and tiredness up and down. Good luck with early stages of treatment, like others have said it takes a little while to settle but is fine x
