Coughing 5yo

How long should I wait, or should I take ds to the dr?

He's been coughing for about 3 weeks. Doesn't seem ill at all, coughs on and off throughout the day (obviously I don't know what he's liek at school), but hasn't had a cold. In the last week the cough has begun bothering him at night. It's a wettish cough, not a dry hack, though it started that way.

Could it possibly be hayfever?

Oh, that hadn't occurred to me. We moved house from major city to rural town a couple of months ago, so I suppose that he could be responding to plants to which he's not accustomed. But then wouldn't he be coughing more out-of-doors? He seems better, if anything, in the garden. ATM the cough seems worst at night and in the mornings. I wondered about asthma - isn't that supposed to be worse at night? But isn't that supposed to be a dryish cough?

Not neccesarily out of doors. different people react in different ways.
Coughing at night is an indicator of asthma. But consider that asthma is an inflammation of the airways, so it would be difficult to differenciate between asthma and hayfever without trying to treat the hayfever IYSWIM.
It would be unusual for asthma to get worse with a move OUT of the city, it would usually improve.
There are a few things that you could try to do.
Humidifier at night or steam him in the bathroom before he goes to bed.
an antihistamine.
raise his bed up on some books.
a decongestant (otravine nasal drops?)
If non of this works or you feel he is getting worse and not better I would make an appt to see your GP or in the mean time have a wee chat with your local pharmasist.

I might try antihistamines first. It seems an obvious thing to do. What antihistamines are best for the LOs?
