2 week referral-is this odd?

Sorry in advance if this ends up being long!

I went to the local family planning walk in as I thought my coil had slipped and managed to get onto the subject of my periods.

After 45 mins discussing them with the nurse she told me she needed to refer me to the gynae team, I thought this would take the usual 6 week minimum to receive even a referral letter but I got my letter 2 days later, called to make an appointment and was advised that I had to pick a date within 2 weeks tops.

I have never known of a 2 week referral before, is this a new thing?

What symptoms did you describe (if you don't mind sharing)?

I have heard of 14 day referrals but only where serious illness needs ruling out.

I am NOT in any way saying that there is something seriously wrong, but your dr may have sent an urgent referral for you to get things ruled out as soon as possible.

I have had prolonged, frequent periods for around a year now (since IUD was fitted) but had been to my GP who said it was normal with a coil and gave me meds to help reduce the bleeding (they didn't work).

The nurse who saw me seemed worried about the heaviness and duration of my periods mainly.

I thought I might just need my coil taking out?

I am familiar with two week referrals and yes it's something GPs use when they want a serious illness ruled out. In your case I suppose unusual vaginal bleeding is presumably the symptom they want checking out. Most of the people referred under this service will in fact be completely fine. So nothing to fret about but take the appointment and get sorted. Can't be nice for you atm.

The first date I could get off work was the 16th-over the two weeks but no option, think it's going to be a long wait until then!

she's referred you as the iud normally reduces periods its the copper coil that can create heavier periods. she's probably flagged you in case its slipped and isnt working properly. try not to panic, easier said than done I know Smile

I have a copper coil in-an IUD not an IUS, as I don't react well to hormones. It is in place-I was examined by the nurse.
