Weird lump thing on the ovary?

Hi everyone.

I was just wondering if anyone had an idea what this could possibly be, especially if you are medically trained.

My Mum has had problems within her menopause and bleeds a lot/is in a lot of pain. She has fibroids in her ovaries and got a test today to see how bad they were (planning to have a hysterectomy). As well as several fibroids they also found a lump/circular thing on one of her ovaries when they gave her an internal examination.

They said they aren't sure what it is and they want her to come back in 6 weeks so they can check it again. If it's still there they said she'll need an MRI (I didn't think this would work for the ovaries?) but it might be gone as it's near her time of the month and it could be a released egg on the screen.

I'm really worried about what it could be and so is my sister. She is 52 and although there is nobody else in our direct family who has had ovarian cancer, it's really rather scary. I didn't know if it was ovarian cancer they are suspecting, or something else?

Is it worth her getting a private scan to put her mind at rest as I looked up about ovarian cancer and it spreads quick and the prognosis is not good. I just can't relax for worrying now and I have a 12 week baby I adore and love looking after but just can't help worry.

Can anyone help???

If going private is an option then I think it's definitely something she should do. I have a couple of cysts, ovarian and liver, and was told I'd get a non-urgent referral for each if them. I went private for peace of mind and obviously to completely rule out anything sinister. As it us they want to just keep an eye on things which I'm happy with but if I hadn't gone private I'd still be waiting and worrying.

Thank you fedup She is going to get the C125 test and see if that's a positive. If so they are going to do an immediate referral. If not, Mum is planning to go private for peace of mind and to find out for sure as C125 is only 60% accurate or something like that?

My DD had a lump on one ovary. She also had to wait 6 weeks and the next scan showed it had reduced/shrunk to a dot. It was a harmless cyst.

The CA125 test is not specific for ovarian cancer - it can have raised levels with many benign conditions. It is usually done in conjunction with scans and BMI (if I remember correctly) to give a score, which indicates the risk.
It isn't as straight forward as a CA125 test being positive/negative I'm afraid.
There's more information about investigation here.
Was the assessment today at gynaecology outpatients?

HaveIGotPoosForYou · 03/07/2013 21:10

The assessment was yesterday at gyno unit, yes.
they gave her an internal pelvic ultrasound.
as well as the ca125 they are going to give her another scan in 6 weeks anyway, but Mum is seriously considering getting it checked privately as you just don't know.
Will bookmark that and show it to Mum Bela thanks :)
