Is sickness & Diarhea (sp?) catching ?

Apologies for my thickness but DD seems to have come down with a sickness/diarhea(sp?) bug, she been sick once this morning and have just changed 3 extremely loose nappies in the space of about an hour, she's now walking like John Wayne bless her :(
I've given her an apple to eat purely because she wont touch dry bread and she wouldn't eat ther tea last night, trying to get her to drink water but she wont touch it and waiting for DP to get back from the shop with diaralyte for her.
Has suddenly dawned on me that being 16 weeks pregnant I seriously don't want to catch this but is it likely to be catching ?

yes, weak cordial better than no water.

You don't have to starve her, can give her bland food - no dairy, no fruit, but things like bread and egg are OK. I usually give ground rice made with water and a little sugar first as it's very easy on the gut. I suggest you do give her something if she won't have the diarolyte (and even if she will tbh, unless you've been told not to by a doctor)

Thanks SP.
I will give try her on some rice, she has managed a few grapes, half an apple and a tiny mouthful of banana. Only realised a while ago that fruit probably wasnt a great idea because of the acid.

yes - no more fruit if you can help it!

Esmummy · 03/06/2006 19:22

She has just had a reasonable size bowl of plain boiled white rice, she seemed sooo grateful bless her ! I said 'sorry its not alot darling and doesn't seem very appetising' and she replied 'its OK mummy', she's only 23 months :)
She is now tucked up in bed with another weak beaker of juice, have had windows open all day so her room is really cool.
We'll see how tonight goes, hopefully this time tomorrow she'll be as right as rain.

My ds has gone down with this bug too - admittedly only diahorrea not vomiting - Rhuby its your fault then because you passed it to me via email!! LOL Grin

Rhubarb · 03/06/2006 20:56

I don't have your email!

Ds was sick again tonight, he was last sick on Wednesday, but he's not been eating well. I'd just given him a compote and he'd nibbled some cheese. Put him to bed 2 hours later, heard a cry, went up and he'd puked big style all over the floor! Have a feeling this bug is long lasting! Tomorrow he's on rice and water and I'm not going to force him to eat anything if he doesn't want to. No fruit or fruit juice, plain foods only for 48 hours. Will also apply the same rule to myself, I won't touch alcohol until tomorrow! Grin

Esmummy · 05/06/2006 12:40

Well we are still going with the diarhea. It's been 48+ hours now and although the number of accidents are slowing down they are still happening.
Yesterday was the first day she asked for food so she had some chips for her lunch which she seemed fine with then she had some more plain rice for tea. I went to check on her at 10pmish and she had pooed and again at 6 this morning, she has since had 2 more poo's this morning and all she has eaten is a bowl of grapes.
She is now eating a bowl of plain boiled pasta but am getting quite concerned now, its usually over with in 24 hours with DD. She will not touch the diaralyte at all, have tried putting sugar in it, have tried mixing it in with her juice and have even tried tipping it into a fruit shoot but just wont work, although she will drink the weak orange juice.

Do you think i should take her to the doctors ? But what can they do ? Am just concerned about her becoming dehydrated as she isn't weeing alot either

She has just eaten half her past and it is out already :( This isn't good is it ?

MIL thinks there is an alternative to diaralyte that basically does the same job, am going to ring local chemist and see if they have it

If you are concerned, I would make a doctors appointment. If she cannot keep food & water down, she runs a risk of dehydration.
I would get her checked out just to be on the safe side tbh.
Seems my DS1 now has this bug - joy!

crazydazy · 05/06/2006 13:14

Oh no poor you Blueteddy, I remember you saying your boys had it around Xmas.

blueteddy · 05/06/2006 13:14

Third blimmin D&V bug this year!!!

Esmummy · 05/06/2006 13:14

Thanks Blueteddy, don't know what i expect anyone to say really, just nice to have a response.
I would be extremely concerned if she was vomiting still but she isn't its just the diarhea but even the juice doesn't seem to be staying in. Have gone through a whole pack of 26 pampers since Friday

Esmummy - I remember DD when she was a baby was sick for a whole week, it was horrible at the time and I kept taking her back to the docs but he just seemed to think that she had just a nasty bug and was taking awhile to work through her system with her being a baby.

I know its hard but try not to worry too much.

Esmummy · 05/06/2006 13:19

Yep and I think that is just what my doctor will say too. She is fine in herself although is quite sleepy, am just really concerned about the deydration. My Niece ended up in hospital on a drip because she was dehydrated and i'm terrified of the though of that happening with DD, she only 2 poor little mite

Only thing that can comfort you is the fact that this way they are building up resistance to infections.

DD had lots of bugs/colds etc as a baby but now she is 6 and has not had nothing for over a year now [touch wood, would not like to tempt fate]

Polgara2 · 05/06/2006 14:54

Just to let you know that dd1 had a couple of diarrhoea episodes when she was younger that lasted 10 days!!! Just kept her on bland foods and it eventually went back to normal - so don't panic. Doctor said this was quite normal too, viruses can last anything upto 10 days he said, so you might know we'd go up to the maximum!
