Help - I think I've snapped something!

I stupidly tried to chase a fox away that was trying to get at our rabbits and I heard and felt a snapping sound on my left calf. At the time (20 mins ago), it didn't hurt but now it's throbbing all the way down to my ankle.

Do you think I have snapped something if so what and what shall I do? My DH is at work so I am at home alone with DC's and apart from raising it up I am not sure what to do. It bloody hurts and I cannot walk on it or flex my foot. :(

TIA

Achilles ?

lougle · 27/06/2013 20:30

Well it certainly sounds like you've done yourself a mischief.

Could your DH come home so you can go to A&E, or do you have a friend/relative who can sit with them? Obviously you'd need some way of getting there too.

I don't think it's the Achilles as it's on the fat part of my calf. There is no swelling. My DH cannot really come home and we have nobody to help - I think if it is still sore in the morning then I will have to go and see a doctor but I'm just wandering what to do right now.

Rest Ice Compression Elevation (RICE) sounds like achilles to me (not a doctor) because u heard it snap! Poor you take it easy

could be part of the calf muscle that tore a bit? i found high heels helped the pain when walking tho possibly not overall a good idea in case of falling over Smile

RawCoconutMacaroon · 27/06/2013 21:59

You have probably torn a bit of the muscle. You may develop significant bruising over the next few days (I have hyper mobility and am prone to muscle tears as part of that), but if you have a full range of movement and not much swelling, you probably haven't done that much damage! Painfully tho, and it may take a while to heal, so take care over the next few months not to over stress that calf again.

Now... Elevate above the level of your heart, cold compress will soothe and ibuprofen.

Thank you for all your replies. I think I panicked a bit because I heard a snap. The pain has reduced, although I cannot put any weight onto it. I will see how it is in the morning. Hopefully, it just sounded worse than it is.

Sudden snapping pain and unable to weightbear needs to be seen but can wait till morning if you can't get to A&E tonight. Don't ignore it though, needs checking out properly.

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/06/2013 23:14

If worsening pain/swelling - get seen tonight.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 27/06/2013 23:19

I agree- if you can't put weight on it, (rather than it just being a bit sore when you do) get it checked! You may have done something a little worse than a partial tear.
