cervix at a 'funny angle'

During my pregnancy with DD (about a year ago) I had a check done when I had some bleeding, there wasn't a problem in the end but the nurse said 'has your cervix always been at a funny angle' I said I wasn't sure, but was focusing on if DD was ok so didn't question it.

I was just wondering if anyone else has a cervix at a "funny angle" or knows what it means/if it's a problem?

I've been told this. I was even told that it might mean I would need a c-section, but 2 DCs later, that was not the case.

I had an internal scan earlier this year (not pregnancy related) and the nurse did find it a little trickier than normal, or so she said. But it's not what I would call problematic.

My grandma apparently had the same thing and she always thought that was the reason her cap failed four times (hence four unplanned children!!) but, to my knowledge, no-one with any medical training ever substantiated that theory.

I've been told mine is very high and far back 'round a corner' was used at one point.

I just think it was hiding because they were making a mess of fitting a coil

My GP once said to me 'you do know you have a retroverted uterus, don't you?'

Errrrrrm.......no . Apparently it points backwards, iyswim.

That was pre-dcs. Now it mainly means that smear tests are excruciating rather painful if the person doing it isn't sensitive and takes their time...

Mine is tilted the wrong way. It meant that all of my early pregnancy scans had to be carried out internally as it couldn't be seen using the external thingy. (Technical expression )

yeah I got told I am an 'anatomical variation', which I presume is polite for weird cervix position.

Most have an anteverted uterus, some have retroverted. Normal variation. Just makes you special

I have this. It once took 2 nurses 2 hours and about 50 different styles of diaphram to come to the conclusion that mine is too oddly-shaped to be effectively capped-off!

They even went to the box of 'hysterical historicals' and got one that must have been fashioned in about 1952, complete with its own little cardboard box, like a mini version of the ones they used to carry gas masks round in. It looked like the rubber finger tip things they wear in the bank.

They needed bothe nurses because the first, qualified nurse had fingers that were too short to reach, so she went and got a very tall student nurse, who had to do all the fitting. She said after that, she'd be the best-trained student they'd got!

My uterus is retroverted too. Coil fittings and smear tests are really not fun. It's hard convincing whoever is performing the procedure that the problem is inserting the speculum (please don't just shove hard and wiggle it around in the hope you'll position it properly) not the actual smear or inserting the coil. Our gynae specialist at our GP surgery is much better though, so I refuse to let anyone else loose down there with a speculum.

One trick to coax out awkward cervixes (cervices??) is to make fists with your hands and then stick them under your bum while in the oh-so graceful feet together/knees bent/legs akimbo position. It alters the angle of your pelvis and sometimes helps the cervix to pop into view.

Yes mine is retroverted and veers 'off to one side' too. I always tell whoever is doing a smear/internal exam etc before they start digging around. Over the years I've had a few people who a) can't find my cervix at all, b) who have made my eyes water trying and c) who seem very good at sorting things out. The fists under bum seems to help and this time round the practice nurse asked me to turn onto one side and lift one leg up (very undignfied!!!) but it really worked!

Re incredibly painfull smear tests. (Still haven't booked mine. It's THAT bad).

Oblamov: I finally relented and booked one and it was OK. My GP suggested that I ask for the gynae specialist GP rather than the nurse and talk about why it's always excruciating. She was very understanding and it didn't hurt at all (although it's hard to tell how much that's down to the NSAID, paracetamol and tramadol drug combination I was on at the time).
