How quickly should jaundice be treated?

FIL developed jaundice over the weekend after having what he thought was a vomiting bug. Blood tests have apparently shown his bile duct is blocked possibly by a gallstone. He is going for an ultrasound this afternoon. But his GP has made an appointment for him to come back for more blood tests next Monday and then to see him on Weds (ie nearly a week away). FIL is very weak, can barely stand up and is still throwing up and in pain. I would have thought this was a medical emergency.

There is more background to this (which is why we are so concerned) which is that he has been ill most of the year with a succession of problems including chronic back pain, being unable to feel his feet, rashes and more recently weight loss and fatigue. This could all be linked to the gallstone or it could be something else.

We are 300 miles away and DH is currently in plaster and non-weight bearing after an op so we are stuck. SIL is there but a bit useless. We spoke to them on the phone last night and have told them that when they next see the Dr they need to emphasise all his symptoms not just the ones that have appeared over the weekend. They are of the generation who don't like to make a fuss. FIL has never really been ill in the 20+ yrs I've known him.

It sounds like pernicious anemia, I would go back to the DR.

Thanks sydlexic - I've just had a look at the symptoms and it does fit with a lot of FIL's problems. I will get DH to ask him to ask the Dr to check for it. I'm kind of hoping that whatever it is, its something that is easily treatable, and not something more sinister.

Scan was clear. Not sure if that's good or bad.

I have recently been diagnosed with b12 deficiency, I have been reading about pernicious anemia all week. I had my gall bladder removed 18 months ago. I have read that a diagnosis of pernicious anemia often coincides with having gallstones due to the lack of intrinsic factor.

The good thing is it is treatable with b12 injections. Hope he is better soon.
