Heavy periods causing Anaemia

Iwantavwcamper · 19/06/2013 10:16

I've suffered long term from heavy periods and on and off with being anaemic. At the moment I'm really anaemic again and feeling quite poorly. I've used tranexamic acid during periods for some years to help with reducing bleeding but I think the time had come to try something else. My GP has suggested the Mirena coil but I'm not sure. I was sterilised after my last pregnancy so don't need it for contraception. I'm worried about the effects of the hormones it contains and having the coil inside for some years. I was wondering about endometrial ablation. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences? Thanks so much.

I would be asking the GP for a referral to a gynae. You need to establish exactly WHY this is happening rather than try and treat the symptoms with varying degrees of success. GPs are generalists and this type of issue is outside their remit.

Gynae issues like fibroids and endometriosis can both cause heavy bleeding to arise.

Yes please check for fibroids. My cousin had this. Horrible, horrible anaemia. Sshe was so weak, she could barely stand. Needed surgery, but has nounced back amazingly. She now looks a picture of health

I went to my GP in jan this year with awful, heavy, endless periods. I thought she might say I had to just hang on until menopause, as I'm late 40's. Instead I was referred to a gynae consultant and had an ablation in april, which has been the best thing ever for me. I'm still building my iron levels up but I feel so much better and all the social inconvenience and worry has gone as well. Brilliant! HTH

I am going for an ablation next month, because of heavy flow and anaemia, I can't wait for it to be done. I am so tired of being tired, of taking crazy amounts of iron, of the mess and agro, I just want it over already.

I found spatone excellent for boosting my iron levels and quickly, compared to iron tablets which just made me feel sick. So worth a try then back to the GP for a referral.

I'm using Spatone also (although not for your reasons). I take 2 sachets per day and really love it. I signed up for a standing monthly order with amazon which costs me approx. £10 per month.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'm going to see the GP on Friday and will definitely ask for a gynae referral. I'll look into the Spatone too. I feel like I've struggled on with this for so long now, something has got to change.
