Rectal Prolaspe

Bit of a rare one, but I'm hoping someone out there might be able to help.

DD has had rectal prolaspe for 3 mnths now (she 6mnths old) and I have been told it will disappear on it's own. Anyone have any idea how long it takes to disappear?

I think a friend's DS has this. He is now almost 5 and ocasionally has a problem. I know he takes somethign to keep his stools soft so he doesn't have to strain.

I will ask her for you - will see her tonight.

Although I am sure someone else will be along sooner!

Thanks budababe. Please can you ask her if it causes him pain? DD is already on a laxative (sodium picosulphate). She fusses all day and has no way of telling me whether it is the prolaspe that is hurting/making her uncomfortable or whether the laxative is giving her a sore tummy. She even seems to be withholding farts.

My friends DD had this when she was a baby, she is absolutely fine now (6) and because of the early problem, she was (in my friends words) a doddle to toilet train because she always had a strong sense of when she needed to go.

Can't remember how long it took to go tho

If it appears to be causing your daughter problems or even if you just feel uncomfortable about it, go back to your gp and ask if you can be referred to hospital for it. Keep asking questions until you are happy with the answers.
My daughter had a similar problem when she was a baby. She was referred to the hospital where she was prescribed lactulose to keep stools soft so that she didn't have to strain. What you don't want is her to get into the habit of with-holding because it hurts and then getting into the constipated/wont' go/hurts cycle. We were also given the number of a community nurse to keep in touch with if we had any problems. The lactulose worked and everything did go back to normal.
Keep asking until you are satisfied. Hopefully, all will be well soon.

Sorry CADS - didn't see my friend the other night after all and she is now away till Tuesday. I promise I will talk to her for you.

I do know that her DS isn't in any pain as he takes something (could be lactulose). She had to warn the teachers at school in case he had a problem with the rectum "coming down" whilst at school but I think he now knows what to do himself.

Hi juuule

Thanks for replying. DD has been on sodium picosulphate since March, and is already withholding even poos. She fusses all day, and has mucus in her stools, all the time. Some of her poos are pure mucus, not sure if this is due to the prolaspe or the laxative.

I'm scared to try lactulose again because when she had it in the passed she landed up having 5 days of diarrhoea. She is CMP intolerant and because of all the diarrhoea we suspect she might also be lactose intolerant.

We are seeing the paed on Monday and i just wanted to get some more information of what others have experienced with this so that I can speak to the paed, about trying different laxatives. Unfortunately, I sometimes find doctors a bit dismissive and like to have the facts.

Great that you are seeing someone about it Monday. As I said, don't come away until you are satisfied. Ask about everything that is worrying you and if the the answer makes no sense, rephrase the question and ask again. Make sure that you come away knowing what the plan is. The good news is that as your dd is so young, as long as this is sorted out now, she shouldn't remember any of it and will have no problems when it comes to using a potty.
Good luck for Monday.

Thanks again, juuule
