My Dad is in hospital

He was taken to hospital on tuesday by ambulance after collapsing at work. He is 63 and a heavy smoker and drinker, he probably doesn't have a very good diet either and has a lot of takeaways etc. He is a plumber so has quite a strenuous job and tbh I'm surprised this hasn't happened before.
Apparently he felt rough over the weekend and spent it in bed and didn't eat anything, he went to work on monday and felt awful so went straight to bed when he got home and didn't eat anything then either, on tuesday he collapsed. He had a temperature of 41 and low blood pressure.

He was on 2 drips yesterday and oxygen, and has had a chest x-ray and a CT scan this afternoon. They first suspected pneumonia and have since ruled that out.
He expected to come home today but has been put on another drip which is going to be in for 4 days. I'm very worried about him although he sounded much better today.

Hope this is a wake up call for him to give up smoking and drinking.

What a nasty shock, I hope he is feeling better and able to come soon and that it is indeed a wake up call for him :) Flowers for you

Poor you and poor dad. Bloody worrying.

It sounds like he is progressing ok but you are right that to keep progressing he will need some lifestyle changes - do they have contact for the non-smoking groups to help him?

My FIL was in his early 50's when he had a huge heart attack. He loved his wines and whiskies, was smoking and wasn't know to exercise. He was lucky to survive and it was a wake up call.

But I think 15 years later he smokes a few cigs with his youngest son on the sly and the drinking has crept back in but it is far less. Noticing he cannot walk up hills which worries me...
