What could a "breast abnormality" mean? Have to go back after a mammogram.

Hi

I had a mammogram last month and received this letter today:

"The mammogram, which was done on the 08/05/2013 shows an abnormality with the Right breast.

The radiologist feels this is not likely to be a serious problem but some further X-rays and or ultrasound of the area have been advised in order to clarify the situation.

In a small number of cases a needle test may be performed."

What do you think "breast abnormality" could mean? Are the reassuring words just protocol so that I don't worry all week or are they real?

H has just said that it will be just an "old age" lump and they are following procedure. Thanks - I am 44 and do not actually feel "old".

What worries me is that the first mammogram WAS the procedure, so it must/may be serious for them to want to see me again?

My mother got breast cancer when she was 41, and died of it at 63 so this is frightening.

Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

Thank you Smile.

Your DH Hmm, typicalSmile.
Many women are recalled after a mammogram if anything at all is seen as different. Especially as your DM had it at 41 they are being very thorough/cautious.

My DD had a letter of recall on the Saturday with an appt for the Monday, which was very scary. Had 5 biopsies < she had no lump, it was a cluster of calcified cells on the mammo >, but results were benign.

Good luck.

It could be a simple cyst. Try not to worry.

Thank you. Am weirdly feeling ok (in denial?) but it is at the back of my mind all the time. Started to google but that was a bit scary so stopped.

Have you been given an appt. for the further investigations? DD got a letter Saturday for an appt Monday. It was very quick and she had the results the same week on Thursday.

i had to go back after a mammogram (I am 37) as us youngsters don't scan on mammograms v well because we have lovely young dense breasts (tell that to your DH)

so I had to have further ultrasounds to check out a lumpy area. They even had an oncologist check the scans and my breasts to be doubly sure.

i'm fine. Just a bit cysty and lumpy Grin

Yes, digerd, I've been given an appointment for both a second mammogram to the breast (am now worring about excessive radiation doses as they don't provide a thyroid shield but that's another story), and an ultrasound. Both this Monday.

Thanks Badgers - I will tell dh - that made me feel better Smile.

DD had this too - don't worry, it should not affect your Thyroid or even touch it. Did you wear a shield at your last mammo, then?

DD's letter actually said ulrasound, which I think would have been preferable, but they did not have one available, so used the mammo.
I was also a bit worried but DD was not.

I have older breasts and not so 'dense' or firm as they were. The young male dr at the breast clinic I went to a few years ago, just felt mine and announced I had just lumpy breastsConfusedBlush.

Oh, you are having an ultra sound for the biopsy.
And yes DD had another mammo on arrival and then the 5 biopsies under another mammo!Hmm. But she had no lump and was calcified cells, perhaps the ultra sound would not have detected them.
