Mirena Coil

Him looking for a bit of advice. I have had a copper coil for three years and my periods are heavier and go on for a long time (7-9 days). Wasn't a problem to start with as was breastfeeding for the first nine months of this. Went to the docs this week as have been feeling quite run down, had some blood tests and have got low ferratin levels (8 when bottom of normal is 22). Have had this before at the end of breastfeeding but not to this extent. As well as eating more iron rich food (have started eating meat although have been vegi since age 15), and taking prescribed iron tablets have been advised to rethink contraception. Know I don't want any more kids but for some reason a bit scared of being sterilised and the nurse (also went for swab as I have an infection down there sorry tmi) recommended the Mirena. Was wondering what anyone's experiences have been, bit worried about putting on weight with it and also think that with no periods I will be POAS every month, although would hopefully get past this.

I had mine 3 weeks yesterday put in. 2 weeks in and I'm bleeding really bad worse than before with massive clots, I've been bleeding now for 8 days with no let up in sight. I hate mine but others I know that have them say its brilliant.
I would say its worth a go.

I think with all types of contraception, some things work great for some people but can be a nightmare for others. You just have to try them and see i guess. I had 11 months of hell with the copper coil. It really didn't suit my body, was like having an alien inside me.

I had it taken out and mirena put in 3 years ago. It was the answer to my contraceptive prayers. No side effects, no weight gain (apart from the first month when I gained a couple of pounds but was water retention), don't need to think about it.

It is so convenient not to have periods. But you are right about the POAS, I have to do this sometimes for my peace of mind, even though it is supposed to be as effective as sterilisation (I think).

Hated the mirena coil!! It turned me into a depressed psycho bitch!! Removed it myself (yes, yes I know) just over a year ago and was back to my old self almost right away Smile

We are all so varied aren't we? I love mine, felt funny for about 5 days, one period and nothing since. I feel like family is finished but agree that the other methods seem too 'final'.
Never felt the need to POAS as I've not had any other pregnancy symptoms. No weight gain.

I've had mine in for just under a month. Started a very light bleed 10 days after, went on for 6 days. Had a day off. Proper period started, around normal time. Was so much lighter than my awful clot filled periods. However I am still bleeding, but back to very light. I was hormonal rage woman for a week or so, but that's calmed down now. I'm also continuing to lose weight on my diet at the same rate I was before it was inserted.

I'm on my second mirena coil .

I had one inserted in May 2002 , stayed in for 5 years . Second one , August 2007 , this is still in , as I'm quite old it can stay for 7 years .

Best contraceptive ever , IMHO .

Had mine put in on the 25th march

Bled quite heavily for the first 5 weeks and had really bad cramps but I had also had a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy at the same time so the bleeding and cramps could have been caused by that.

Haven't had any bleeding or cramps since and no weight gain.

At one point I desperately wanted it removed and remember sobbing and begging my gynecologist to remove it but now I'm really glad I listened to him and stuck it out.

Like everyone else has said we are all different.

I am also on my 2nd mirena. The first one took just under 6 months to settle- I spotted almost every day during that time. Then I stopped and haven't bled much at all since. In fact I don't think I could tell you when I last had a period!
Anyway, this one had been in for 18 months. Much better- no spotting, no cramp. Having them in and out isn't nice, but it is ove and done with fast enough.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/06/2013 07:43

Had mine for 2 years now. Had the spotting for the first few weeks then have settled down to a very light period every month, before my periods were heavy and long.

BetsyBell · 08/06/2013 08:21

It's worked brilliantly for me, I'm on my third one - periods got lighter gradually over 8 months and haven't had one since. Had first one removed after 16 months or so to conceive, fell pregnant within a couple of weeks and had a new one put in before my periods started up post baby. Had my 2nd removed after 5 years and a new one put in but I would never ever ever do this in the same session again, cervix did not approve and I was in shocking pain for a few days.

I had some weight gain due to other factors (eating too much!) but have lost all and more so I'm now slimmer than I've ever been since my early 20s.

I've read horror stories so try it out and trust your body - if it doesn't like it get rid of it. If docs are reluctant to remove you can always claim you're ttc!

I've had the odd occasion where I've been weirdly crampy and read up on the horrors, vowed to have it removed and then forgotten all about it. This has happened twice over 9 years. My only side effect is I'm more prone to thrush, but it's treatable and I can live with it. I used to have vile periods and almost anything is a better alternative.

I love mine and wish I'd started using one years ago. I was always put off by other women's bad experiences on the internet.
I love not having to do anything and having no periods. I haven't put on weight or had mood swings.
