Any doctors about? Is this normal anatomy or should I go to the GP?

Very odd problem with my nose/throat not sure if I should be worried or not. It's difficult to describe but I'll do my best

When I was pregnant last year I suffered from an overproduction of thick saliva/ mucous which used to get so bad it made me gag and vomit several times a day. I assumed this was hormonal and would improve after the baby was born.

DD is now almost 7 months old and while it has improved a lot and I don't vomit any more I still have a 'thick' feeling at the back of my throat, as if I need to constantly clear my throat. It's worse when I lie down and makes me cough.

The thing that is worrying me is that I can actually feel something but I'm not sure if it's just normal anatomy. If I run my tongue back along the roof of my mouth and reach my tongue around behind my uvula I can feel two soft squishy objects bulging from my nasal passages (i can feel air coming through the holes they are protruding from when I inhale through my nose so I know that's my nasal passage). Should these be there? I've googled nasopharyngeal anatomy but can't figure it out. Not sure if I should go to GP or not, will he just laugh at me and tell me it's normal? Help!

Best go to the doctors...

knackeredmother · 05/06/2013 21:21

Are you feeling your tonsils?
I'm intrigued how you can even reach behind your uvula with your tongue!

MadameJosephine · 05/06/2013 21:25

You'd think it would make you gag but it doesn't. Definitely not tonsils, they're not in the right place for tonsils

I suppose I should probably go but i don't think the GP will be able to see them and it's hard to explain

Wouldn't it be your adenoids? They could be inflamed, perhaps? I know people often have them removed together with tonsils. What you describe sounds like a severe case of post nasal drip. Get thee to the doctor.

winnybella · 05/06/2013 21:27

Yes, GP will be able to see them. Google 'adenoids', I bet that's what it is.

MadameJosephine · 05/06/2013 21:58

I did consider adenoids and I've just had another google just in case and the symptoms sound the same but in diagrams it looks like adenoids are on the back wall of your throat and these are on the front, sort of tucked behind uvula. To see them you'd need a very odd shaped mirror I think and I'm not sure you'd be able to get it far enough back in my mouth

I'm going to have to go to the doctors and try to explain it to him I think

Polyps?

Get an ENT referral - they have a little camera that goes up your nose and down the back of your throat so will see pretty easily what's going on.

Pretty impressed by your ability to get your tongue behind your uvula! Grin

digerd · 06/06/2013 17:15

Ditto.
I've just tried to get my tongue as far back as I can and it only reaches about 2 cms back up the soft roof of my mouth, nowhere near my nasal air ways and I have no tonsils as had them out at 4.

MadameJosephine · 06/06/2013 18:30

Looks like I've either got a long tongue or a small mouth Smile actually I do have a smaller than average jawbone as I had to have 8 teeth removed be abuse of overcrowding so I only have 24 adult teeth instead of 32, that might have something to do with it I suppose

queenofcats I've just googled nasal polyps and sounds like that might be it, either way I'm off to the doc, got an appointment next Thursday

Thanks everyone!

*because of overcrowding

Just a quick update, saw GP today and she's referred me to ENT surgeon for investigations. She said it would be a routine referral as she didn't think it was anything malignant! Hadn't even thought of that!
