Help! What could this be?

I'm in need of the collective wisdom of MN.

My dd has just come to me with a sore/painful lump on her head - it's about a cm across, is behind her ear, and on examination under a bright light, is not red, swollen or an insect bite.

She told me that she first discovered it yesterday, and that it was smaller then but still 'sore'.

I've drawn a line around the outside, and am leaning towards her getting it looked at, especially if it gets any bigger.

Anyone have any idea at all what this could be?? Confused

swollen gland? I got lots of lumps like that when I had German measles.

I also think this is a swollen gland. My dd had a very similar thing a couple of years ago. Apparently any kind of infection on the scalp causes glands behind the ears to swell. Does your dd have any scratches or insect bites on her scalp? Really alarming I know to find things like this. You probably still want to take her to the gp anyway, I'd imagine. Let us know what happens. Xx

Oooh good point! She had an mmr booster last week - wonder if it could be related?

I'm going to have a good look at her head in the morning to see lucsnowe, she's more likely to sit still for me then.

Thank you both! Flowers

What did you find, Tapirbackrider? Is the swelling still there? It might be caused by some kind of infection you can't actually see. Also, I think vaccinations might make glands react, as you suggest. Let us know anyway!

She was at the dr's this morning - it's a swollen gland and she was given antibiotics for it.

She's now vegging on the sofa claiming to be unwell Hmm Grin

Oh good. I'm pleased you have the antibiotics. Good to have it looked at so soon. It might take a while to go down, if it's like my dd's gland. Take care.

I was going to say mumps, as I had it at 16 and dr said one lump behind the ear and hurting when opening my mouth to eat/yawn,were typical symptoms I didn't feel ill, though.

Also had regular swollen glands until 10, but they were in my neck under the jaw bone.
Hope she gets well soon.

She's back at the dr's on Monday - every gland in her head/upper body is swollen, and she looks quite hamster-ish

I'm keeping a suitably sympathetic face on, and resisting the urge to take a few sly photos Grin
