Ds had a high fever this morning while at nursery, which went down with calpol. In the afternoon the fever came by, but he was willing to eat, so I wasn't too worried. Thought was just a cold. However, when I went to give him the bath I noticed all around his genital areas a really heavy rash, looking almost blister like. It appear out of nowhere, so I'm pretty sure is not just a rash. Is mostly on his willy and scrotum. I put a lot of cream and thought I would take him to the doc in the Am. However, he woke up within an hour, and is very upsett and is unwilling to nurse. His lips seemed to be a little swollen and his certainly has mouth disconfort. Can this be anything serious? Should I panick and take him to see the docs tonight!

Much, much thank for any help!

The paracetamol should make him feel better soon and as you say not too long til morning.
Hope you get something like a peaceful night.

Just so you know the rash on a babys bottom can potentially be caused by a urine infection/dehydration.
Offer him as much fluid as possible, 10 mls every 10mins and if you feel he is not improving have his urine tested by GP on call 2morrow.

Don't know if this is true/right, but someone told me that if you ring NHS direct, they can ring the A&E dept in advance of your arrival so you don't have to sit through triage for hours (which would be nasty on a Friday night).

chapsmum, you think the yeast infection could be the result of an urinary infection? I do remember that sometimes yeast infection is more a symptom than a cause on itself? Thanks for the tip, will keep an eye on it....

it's true, claire. last year, i caught a nasty v&d bug from dd1 at 16 weeks pregnant. went home at noon and by 9 was throwing up old blood.

rang NHS24 and they got me an appointment to see an nurse practitioner - thankfully, cuz my opinion of most docs isn't very good.

i went right in to see her at midnight - good b/c by then it was BAD.

by 2AM was in bed w/a drip after a painful, but very effective, anti-emetic.

chapsmum · 26/05/2006 22:19

that is a myth, claire, you still have to wait depending on your triage catagory. However most children (and elderly) are automatically considdred as urgent by most triage scales (inclding thenational traige scale)
I think it is more likely that the UTI has caused the rash and therefor the thrush. (if it is a UTI. could ust be thrush but in the presence of a temp, I would always be cautious and have the urine tested.

appt at a and e?
what ever will the eninbuggers think of next Expat!
All patients regarless of presentation should be triaged within 15 mins of arrival.
They will then wait in order of prority. However the nurse practitioners can run seperate minors clinics. (they dont normally see under 12s unless it is a paediatirc trained nurse practitioner -very rare)

expatinscotland · 26/05/2006 22:22

i got in! but it wasn't a&e, it was a real after hours thingy unit at ERI (Edinburgh Royal Infirmary)

beats the hell out of a&e, tho! that sux. you don't want to be the first person they need to see there.

expatinscotland · 26/05/2006 22:23

i get it now, chaps! yeah, i saw an NP. am so glad to see this profession in the UK now.

chapsmum · 26/05/2006 22:24

I've got a 10.5 month old girl who is teething at the moment. She's got terrible nappy rash (which apparently often goes with teething). It looks like blisters. She's also got a snottty nose and an on an off slightly high temp. This is all, apprently, due to the teething.

She's been miserable all night. I've just got her to sleep with some Calpol.

Maybe your dd could be suffering from the same?

lua · 26/05/2006 22:44

Hi Belo,
I know that DS has his two pre-molar cutting through right now, but his lynph nodes are swollen and his penis is looking really horribly deformed.
Maybe chapsmum can give us better info, but I think the medical consensus is that teething per se should not cause fever, and is often a coincidence. But there was a heated debate on the subject here this week. I do not know though what is the consensus on rahes and teething though... Anyone?

Iua teething can cause fever and rashes however, the diagnosis of 'teething' should be given once all else is ruled it. It should not really be the first answer in the diagnosis if you see what i Mean.
if his penis is looking deformed and he is upset, with a temp I would be inclined to make sure this was not caused by a UTI. Additionally thrush and similar bacterial can cause infections of thepenis and the scrotum and it soul be that perhaps needs an antibiotic.
Either way do not be afraid toseek further help especially if you find he is not passing urine/his urine is dark or smally.
Teething can inadvertantly cahnge the ph of urine and faeces causing irritation however if this irritation becomes infectied it will reqire further treatment.
What did the GP give you?

Miaou · 26/05/2006 22:56

chapsmum - hijack -sorry - see your thread below!

lua · 27/05/2006 19:53

HI chapsmum! Sorry I disappeared last night! It was along one with lots of crying! He was still really grizzly the whole day today, but just the last hour he was getting back to be himself.
The doc gave Nystatin (which is the usual for yeast, no?). I just spot that besides the two pre-molars, he also has the one of the lower canine breaking through, so this must explain a lot of his uncontrollable crying!
I will make sure to have his urine tested though tuesday.
Thanks for all your support
