Verruca advice

DS (age 4) has a big verruca on the pad of his foot. It is about the same size as a rubber on the end of a standard pencil. He has refused to let me do anything at all with it and over the last few weeks it has developed lots of little warty heads and has now started to dry out a bit.

The duct tape fairy visited him during the night last night

and stuck a bit on but obv didn't do her job v well as he ripped it off this morning. Staff at nursery today said that he winced with pain when helping him out his sock back on. He has resolutely denied pain thus far (and continues to do so) although tonight would not step on that foot unless it had a sock on.

I have managed to have another look at it tonight and the little warty heads themselves are still dry and crusty despite being contained in a sock and canvas trainer all day. But it now has a defined thin ring all around the outside, bit like a rubber ring of blistery type skin. I fecking hate the thing and want rid as it makes me feel queasy and I don't want one. Can anyone with verruca experience advise as to whether it sounds like its on the way out or whether the duct tape fairy needs to visit again, this time with a bigger piece of tape to ensure better adherence?

There is no way any of the other suggested treatments will work as he won't let me paint stuff on and file or use freezing stuff or basically anything. I have offered reward chart with Significant Toy at end for allowing me to duct tape but he didn't bite.

Any advice? I haven't been able to take another photo tonight plus having these photos on my phone are grossing me out yes I am a bloody wimp

Then continue to use Tuct tape. Don't expect it to work overnight though, it doesn't need to be changed daily but you may need to use it for several weeks.

When my DD was about 6yo she had a big verruca as you describe plus about 5 others dotted over both feet. I have never done the duct tape method. I bought the Boots own-brand verruca cream - you have to ask for it at the pharmacy. You just squeeze it on like a blob of toothpaste and put a plaster over it. There's no filing or messing around, and it didn't hurt or sting or anything. You could put it on when DS is asleep.

You do this every night for a week or so and then it just fell out in a circle of skin - quite revolting but it did the trick.

nothing has worked for us (sigh). Bribery, OP, bribery is the way forward.

I used some of those pre-medicated little dots on DS (Scholl I think) and they worked really well. Need some more as DD & DS both have one now - might try the duct tape first. Do you just stick a bit over the verruca? How does it work?

stealthsquiggle · 05/06/2013 14:56

DoingItForMyself - have you seen those in stock anywhere - I have checked a few places but no joy. DD has a really sticky-out verruca on the side of her foot, which bleeds copiously every time she bashes it, so I really need to do something about it, and those look ideal.

He woke up last night as DH applied the larger piece of duct tape and screamed hysterically for half an hour. Managed to get him back to sleep but half an hour later we had more screaming. I'm not sure it actually hurts, he says he can't bend his leg which is blatantly untrue and although the duct tape is still on, he won't walk on that foot without a sock on. He (and his verruca) are resistant little buggers. Boots own brand cream might be worth a shot though monikar, thank you. Although we need to learn to be more stealthy with application at night...

There's no saying you'll catch it, pre puberty skin is soft and let's the virus in easily when it's wet.

Adult skin is harder to penetrate, hence less adults present with vp.

One theory is that stress causes you to be more susceptible.

DoingItForMyself · 05/06/2013 20:33

Ouch! They really can be quite nasty. It annoys me that at school they are supposed to wear trainers for indoor PE if they have a verruca, but after all the hassle of treating them, they finally go and the teacher tells them not to wear shoes any more, so they catch another one! Think I'll just get them to lie and say they constantly have them

Stealth, I got them from my local chemist. I have to pop there tomorrow anyway so if they have them I'll pick up some extras and you can PM me your address. I can get some for you too if you like Rocky.

stealthsquiggle · 05/06/2013 21:23

Oooh, Doing, that's really kind of you. Let me know if you get some and I will PM you address and send you the money. I actually took DD to the GP this morning because I was not 100% sure it was a verruca, but it is.

I had the super fun parental double this evening - in addition to dealing with 2 DC's manky feet, DS turned out to have nits Angry. I thought we were going to make it through a whole school year nit free.
