Infection in partially erupted wisdom tooth

I have what seems to be an infection in a partially erupted wisdom tooth. Have got antibiotics, hoping that will sort, as have swollen glands and ear ache in the area.If it erupts fully ( it is still growing), will I have to have it taken out, or is the infection likely to be because something has got trapped?

All my other wisdom teeth have been ok, this one is taking forever and has been a right pain.

Is it a root infection (an abscess), or a gum infection over the top of the tooth?

If it's an abscess, antibiotics will stop the infection spreading, but won't do anything at all to get rid of the infection itself - you'll either have to have root canal or an extraction.

I think it's a different situation if it's a gum infection (called pericoronitis) - in which case, Corsodyl is your friend. That will really, really help.

Not a dentist, but been there, done that etc.

Thank you. It is in the gum I think, under the bit that is covering the part of the tooth that hasn't come through. No pain when biting or when I push the tooth or whatever.

Tried corsodyl but hate the sensation it leavesHmm will persist, but hoping antibiotics kick in soon.

That's definitely pericoronitis, olivio. Not nice. My whole cheek swelled up when I had it.

Corsodyl isn't very nice, I know - but worth considering if the ABs are taking their time. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you. Only got the antibiotics today, so will keep going with corsodyl for a day or two. Found a new alcohol free one today so maybe less unpleasant!

salt water gargles are very good olivo - forget mixture .
Maybe teaspoon to cup of warm water ?
Sounds as though will sting or make you gag but really doesnt .

And I've had it suggested to me to apply corydsyl gel direct to area with interdental brush /tooth brush /whatever .
But I find the gel always slips off .

Dont leave it ,go back to dentist .

Are they likely to let it grow, or want to take it out? They will have to refer me if its being taken out ,could be agesHmm

It depends if it's likely to cause you any other problems - if its growing at a funny angle, or impacted.

Infections like you've got are really common when wisdom teeth are coming through - bits of food get stuck ad it's really difficult to clean properly. But they wouldn't whip the tooth out because of it - it's not the same as a root abscess.

Why would they have to refer you? When I had a wisdom out it was done with local anaesthetic in surgery.

How is it feeling today? Antibiotics kicking in?

My two lower wisdom teeth areboth partially erupted, have been for maybe ten years so I don't think they will ever come through more, and I get this badly enough for antibiotics about once every couple of years. It starts to get sore maybe once a year but I can normally head it off with rinsing with corsodyl and with hot salty water, and with prodding around with my tongue to get the offending bit of food out. I know I should really have both the teeth out but I am too much of a wimp, and it doesn't happen often enough to bother me too much. I got it the last time I was pregnant and remember being in so so much agony because paracetamol didn't touch the pain at all.

Sympathies - I hope it will clear soon. It normally starts to improve for me within about 36 hours of starting the antibiotics.

Thank you, it is much better today, no painkillers needed- hurray!

I am only just done with day 2 of antibiotics, so three more days to go and a massive improvement already.

They would refer me for a GA due to my anxieties, so have t be done at hospital.

I've had this - had the tooth removed as it happened three times. Irrigation helped - springing the tooth/gum with corsodyl, it's sore at first but cleans it out. Hot salty water also helps as do ice lollies, ice cream and hot/cold compresses on your face. Sympathies to you, I hated this, had to drink antibiotic juice (week's dose in one glass or something), it was rank!!
