Almost constant smell of petrol

Hi, this is my first OP - nervous!

Over the last few months I've noticed a strong smell of petrol/exhaust in my house. I assumed for ages it was just coming in from the street but my husband can't smell it. And actually, I live in a cul-de-sac, very quiet! At first I could only smell it in the evenings but recently it's become more common and stronger. At night, when I'm lying down it changes to a smell more like burning.

I've had a look on google (I know, I know) and there are suggestions of anything from stress to brain tumours Shock. I have now stopped looking at google Smile

Has anyone else experienced this? And do you know if I should see a psychologist, my gp or an ear. nose and throat specialist?

Many thanks to anyone who is able to help Flowers

When I had this I found out I was pregnant and I've heard others say it as well Shock

However, if it's been going on for a few months you'd know by now probably.

Are you near a busy road?

I would go to your gp first, I've seen the brain tumour thing in a tv drama so you want to rule that out even though it's very unlikely it will be that. Then see what they suggest.
Good luck :)

MisselthwaiteManor · 03/06/2013 10:35

I would go to your GP, they can then refer you to someone else if need be. Hopefully it's nothing, good luck.

MissBlennerhassett · 03/06/2013 10:46

Thanks all. It's a really quiet road although we are just a little way from a major road. Could be I'm extra sensitive. I hope so. But I think you're all right, I'd better see my GP - hopefully leave feeling daft rather than with a referral Grin. I'll also ask any visitors if they can detect it.

Haha Monty, pregnant! Super-long gestation period, this could make me famous Wink

Your brain smelling smells that aren't really there can be caused by a sinus infection, so a course of antibiotics will sort it but it may take up to 6 weeks to go. Just want to give you a less grim alternative so you're not worrying too much before your GP appointment Smile.

MissBlennerhassett · 03/06/2013 11:57

Thanks Lastyearsmodel! That would certainly be a preferable outcome Flowers. Appointment booked for next Tuesday.

I had a funny smell of stagnant water when I was pregnant, but I guess a trip to Gp will tell you.

MisselthwaiteManor · 03/06/2013 12:32

I could constantly smell wood/MDF at the start of my pregnancy, was convinced it was a symptom but turned out to be all the stuff we had just bought from Ikea Blush DH couldn't smell it at all. It might just be that your DH has a rubbish sense of smell and there's something with a petroly smell in your house somewhere. Silly question because its only in the evenings/night time, is it the mattress??

CBuzz · 03/06/2013 16:30

I sometimes smell a burning type aroma when lying in bed at night - so much so that I often get up in the middle of the night to check we are not alight. This has been going on intermittantly for a few years. I have very bad allergic rhinitis - basically anything and everything makes me sneeze and snivel, and use a steriod nasal spray to keep my benign nasal polyps at bay. I think my nose is basically shot !! I have often worried about it being something more sinister but think I would know if it was by now. Good luck at the docs and let us know what they think.

Monty27 · 03/06/2013 23:22

Miss, oh Blush

Mind you, I bought a circular rug from IKEA (coincidentally) for ds's room when he was little, the smell of chemicals off it was astonishing and I binned it in the end.

My dsis bought a memory foam mattress for her teen ds and she could smell it for months. It freaked her out.

Confused
Monty27 · 03/06/2013 23:23

See? We're not scary are we.

Welcome to MN :)

MissBlennerhassett · 04/06/2013 22:30

Thanks Monty! I think I'd better check all the IKEA furniture before I embarrass myself at the GP's Wink. I do have a memory foam mattress however it's getting on a bit and I didn't notice it before.

Will let you know how it goes. Thanks all.
