Any thoughts on how to cope with temporary Black Hell PMT Despair?

Just that really? Each month I spend a few days feeling like I want to die, not long - just a day or so before af turns up. I want to kill either dh or myself or both.

The I'm ok again. Each time it feels like the end of the world has come, and I have to try very hard to remember that it hasn't, and that in a few days time I'll be ok again. But sometimes I forget and think that the Actual end of the world has come.

Anyone else feel like this? Hmm

Today is one of those days Confused. So I need to remember to stay calm and breathe.

Yes I feel like this. It's shit. I can't help with a way out of it, but I'm hoping someone else can help. I'm in the pits of it right now. Feel like crap :(

Yep I've posted several times about it and there are plenty of others too.

Every time someone posts on chat I feel so awful and don't know why., I ask if they are premenstrual and every time they say actually yes now you mention it.

My coping mechanisms - exercise like hell, seems to keep the hormones slightly more in balance. Remember you know what's causing it and that it will pass in a day or so. Cry as much as you need to.

Hope you feel better soon.

I had this when I was pg but only ever for 24hrs at a time so the waiting for it to pass strategy worked well for me - must be harder to cope with for a few days though?

Have you mentioned it to your GP? Perhaps it might be worth finding out what your options might be?

I know there are supplements meant to help too, hope there's someone along in a minute who knows more than me about this!

Exercise and Agnus castus seems to smooth things out a bit for me

Thanks, at the moment I'm cleaning the house like crazy to take my mind off it. Can't see me being menopausal yet - I'm 38 and periods are still regular as clockwork, it's just the pmt symptoms that have worsened in the last few years. I also get hormonal migraines which come at the same time Hmm

Just to update, I'm still here, af hasn't started yet but the despair has lifted and thankfully I no longer feel like I'm going to jump off a cliff.

I really am grateful that it doesn't last long & have to cling to that when it's happening because otherwise I would lose track of reality and think that the feelings were permanent.

Yes, I get the "everyone must die" PMS. Vitamin B6 (I was taking the Solgar B complex vitamins before I got pregnant) helps a LOT. I'm now getting "everyone must die" days from time to time pregnant when I forget to take my antenatal vitamins...

Over time I've also learned to suppress it. Logically I know everyone should probably survive, or at least be subject to a higher court than my irritability, so I've learned to keep my mouth shut or channel it into minor things (inanimate objects for example).

SqueakyCleanNameChange · 03/06/2013 07:33

B6 (or Vit B Complex). Haven't run amok with the breadknife even once since I've been taking it. And if that doesn't work for you, then your GP can give you other options - this is not something you have to put up with.

ClairesTravellingCircus · 03/06/2013 07:40

Hello OP

I get the same! I actually feel like I'm getting depressed again (been there, got the medal, NEVER want to go back again!).

For a few days all I want to do is cry, then I get my period and I suddenly realise what it was! (Doh)

Am looking with interest at suggestions, as it's truly awful.

ExcuseTypos · 03/06/2013 07:59

My Dr's suggestions really work for me- when I stick to them

-Eat small amounts throughout the day- especially slow energy releasing carbs (ie no white sugar/flour/pasta etc, but lots of wholemeal, non processed food)
-Vit B supplement.
-Drink plenty of water, dehydration makes pmt worse
-Avoid alcohol during bad PMS days
-Regular exercise

In January I followed a low ish carb diet and exercised 4 times a week. I lost 10lbs and had absolutely no PMS symptoms. It was amazing.

Now I really notice if I eat rubbish food, I do suffer more but I realise it will pass and try to promise myself that I won't eat crap next month.
