My 6 year old DS broke his jaw this bank holiday weekend at a skate park. He's broken the condoyle (the hinge at the side of his jaw) and cracked his temporal bone (underside of his skull). Apprently it will heal on it's own and he doesn't need to have his jaw wired, although he has complained that his teeth are mis-aligned. I've had limited aftercare advice from Hospital - don't let him swim and mash his food up! As it's half term we were going to spend most of our time at the skate park in the sunshine, but that's off the table now. He's an active pup and he's bored to death already...

Has anyone else had experience of caring for a child with a child with a broken jaw? Did you get any aditional aftercare advice?

Can you recommend any activities I can do with him beyond cinema and pottery cafe? If I don't get him out of the house he will turn into a Mario Bros character!!! Thanks in advance for any advice...

My (now 18year old) ds broke his jaw when he was 4 but his was wired. We had lots of advice for dealing with wired jaws, particularly from a dietician. Ds ate a lot of soup, mashed weetabix with fruit puree and Complan type milkshakes.

Once the wires were removed he had yearly x-rays and follow up with the maxillo-facial team at the hospital until he was about 10. He then needed orthodontic treatment and braces when he was about 13 and although this wasn't related to the jaw injury the orthodontist did get a copy of ds's medical record from the hospital.
