Bach Flower Remedies

Has anyone used Bach Flower Remedies. Did you find that they had any benefits or no effect? I'd be interested to hear any views.

I can help you on this one. I've tried them on my ds to 'calm' him. Not really sure if they worked or not, as a few changes were going on in his life anyway at the time, but I suppose he did become a bit calmer, and it's good to keep an open mind about these things. You can get them in Boots and everything I have read about them says that they are very safe to use.

I've used Rescue remedy and found that it DID have some effect; even if only because the act of doing something positive to calm down forces you to feel calmer. I'd give it a go. Of course, it might also have something to do with the strong smell of alcohol!

MalmoMum · 27/01/2002 19:45

Have a few bottles around. Someplace. Can't really remember a moment when I found an air of calm descending upon me but a useful distraction when one is needed. As Candy says, at least you feel like you are doing something.

It was the nearest I got to a double brandy in the last weeks of pregnancy.

Pupuce · 27/01/2002 22:57

I took the Rescue Remedy when my strong contractions started because I was worried I would start panicking (I had a home birth). I found it help but who knows... as Candy says it may just have been in my head.
My accupuncturist swears by it and she specifically wanted me to take the remedy if I went into very fast labour (to take after the labour as you can be in shock).

I got some Rescue Remedy for my wedding day, hoping it would calm my nerves. I took the recommended dosage (3 to 5 drops I think) but it didn't do anything for me. As I was desperate and absolutely petrified, I took the whole bottle - it tasted of weak whisky - and I can honestly say that it really didn't calm me down at all. I had some real whisky in the end and that helped a bit. Though my dh complained that I smelt of whisky on the day!

ImogenW · 28/01/2002 14:10

Surely the psychological affects of your wedding day are not going to be overcome by a remedy that you do not believe in taking.

Also, I think you'll find that the Bach's remedy needs to be built up over a number of days, not minutes. Maybe you should try again another time

TLB · 28/01/2002 14:32

I find rescue remedy definitely helps but as to the other remedies I find them a bit weak - have now started trying Busch Flower remedies which I find much more effective (made in Australia and as the sun ahas a stronger effect out there I think this is transferred to the flower) I get mine from Neals Yard near Covent Garden and I suspect they have a website too.

The ebst bach remedy for fear of panicking is Rock Rose and Aspen.

SueDonim · 28/01/2002 15:26

I bought Rescue Remedy to help my fear of flying. Previously I used valium but that's no good when you have two children with you! Anyway, I was amazed that the RR helped so much and DD2 got positively addicted to it as well. Although she wasn't frightened, she was very excited and it calmed her down.

LisaV · 29/01/2002 14:09

Imogen - I took the Bach Flower Remedy dosage first thing in the morning as it did say to give it a couple of hours and my wedding was not until 3pm. I know that it won't help the psychological effects of getting married, but it does say that it will calm you down, which it didn't.

I had taken it with an open mind, I tend to believe whatever is written on the back and if it doesn't work I am more likely to attribute it to my not taking it properly or something. But hand on heart, it did not do anything for me at all.

The best thing I do now is to have a double vodka if I really need calming down, for a quick fix. Or a lavender scented bath for pure relaxation, followed by a massage and lots of sex!

ImogenW · 29/01/2002 14:55

LisaV, I am sure that the Vodka you take before an event will have an affect, but I am not sure it is the right one.

Oh, and I hope the continuous sex you need to calm your nerves did not disrupt your wedding!

emmagee · 29/01/2002 19:28

Rescue Remedy, both the drops and the cream have been used regularly in our house. My dh uses it when he's stressed, I use it when I feel like I can't cope, and we frequently give it to our 3 year old, most notably when she fell down a flight of stairs!

LisaV · 29/01/2002 20:49

No, it didn't disrupt the wedding, but we didn't get much sleep that night! Perhaps that's why I was so nervous on the day - I hadn't had any the night before!

IDismyname · 29/01/2002 21:44

I used Larch on ds after he'd had chickenpox last autumn. It's for a lack of self confidence, and he'd started to hate going to playgroup etc and was generally a bit low. He had it 2 x a day for about 3 weeks. I certainly noticed a difference, but there again time is a great healer. I also used Bach Flower R in conjunction with St Johns Wort when I was trying to kick PND, and I did feel that it worked. I always think they're worth a try!

winnie · 30/01/2002 07:52

I have been using Bach remedies for 17 years (which makes me feel very old). Originally I could only get them from my rather wonderful reflexologist. I am using them at the moment for shock following a recent family tragedy - my reason for being away for days - and I know they help. We give rescue remedy to our cats and to our plants too. The biggest problem with bach remedies is self diagnosis. Miss diagnosis will not harm the individual but the remedy will not help the problem either.

keziah · 30/01/2002 13:34

I regularly use Olive for exhaustion - I have really found it excellent! I used them as a teenager as well and have always found them to work really well.

kizzie · 30/01/2002 17:18

Thankyou for all your responses - really interesting - I think I'll give them a try.

Ems · 30/01/2002 18:36

keziah, funnily enough I heard about the olive last week, and thought I would try it. How do you take yours? As drops on the tongue or mixed in with water, are they both as effective?

Marina · 30/01/2002 19:24

Winnie, are you OK? Thought you had been a bit quiet lately. Hope things improve for you all soon.
I used Rescue Remedy in the run up to my wedding day and my C-section and found it very helpful.

ChanelNo5 · 31/01/2002 14:20

Winnie - I'm really sorry to hear that. Thinking of you.

Thanks guys... my father died last Friday completely unexpectedly at the relatively young age of 55. It has been hideous. I can't believe it. I'm doing all of the paractical things that have to be done and I am arranging the funeral but there is just a huge void. Which is why I've been online at this ridiculous time of the night! Take care everyone and cherish those you love because it is too easy to assume we will all be around forever. Winnie x

Winnie, that is so sad, what a shock for you. I hope you have plenty of supportive friends/family around you at this time.
Thinking of you.
