hysteroscopy, d+c and ga questions

Had an appointment with consultant today and I am on waiting list to have the above op in the next 4 weeks.
Wasn't given much info and am worried.

I also have a baby who is still breastfed and I was wondering if having a GA will mean I can't feed him for a bit afterwards?

Has anybody had this op? What was it like?

Hi ariane, was wondering how you were doing, after reading your thread a couple of weeks ago. Glad you are getting things investigated. I had something similar to this, not quite the same. Mine was GA, hysteroscopy and endometrial ablation, for very heavy periods. The 'nil by mouth' on the morning was hard going for me, but apart from that it was very straightforward. I was home by 2pm, rather tired. I needed the painkillers they gave me that day, but no others. I felt tired generally for a couple of days, but could cope with basic household jobs, although my DC are not young like yours. I've no idea about the bf though, sorry. Try not to worry too much. I know that's not easy.

Thankyou, I just didn't think I'd have to have anything done so soon.

Swabs and smear were normal, had colposcopy today. The us I had last week showed 'something' but they have been very non specific other than saying it might be a polyp/fibroid or something else but that my uterus is full of fluid and the lining very thick.
Keep getting severe pain but stil bf so have had no period for about 2 yrs!

Really don't want an op as don't want to leave dcs and I know ds2 (1) will be really hard work for dh.

I know it's really difficult and a bit scary. I know you already have enough to think about. But, in the absence of magic wands, I think you have to be strong, take some deep breaths and accept that this has to happen. Don't go thinking ahead, all those 'what ifs'. Take it one step at a time. Make a list for DH with a rough schedule maybe, if he's unused to weekday routine. Pack a small bag for yourself, so that is done and ready. You won't need much. I took book, puzzle book, toothbrush flannel etc, all of which stayed in the bag as there wasn't time for any of it! (But I felt reassured anyway.) Could you perhaps buy a small treat for DS2 and put it to one side so that you know he will have a distraction on that day? Thinking about and sorting practical details may not be what you want to do, but I found it helped focus me and ensured I could not keep my head in the sand! Smile

I had a hysteroscopy 10 years ago, not for pain other than a period -like one as had a break through bleeding on HRT and they hadn't been able to see one of my ovaries with the internal mirror on a long stick.

I had a scrape and a few boipsies but they didn't see anything worrying.

I bled for 6 weeks afterwards, which was annoying as I was post menopausal. Confused
My op was only a 20 minute procedure under GA.
It is possible as you have not had a period in 2 years the lining has thickened and needs a scrape.

ariane5 · 29/05/2013 15:24

I wondered if that was why periods hadn't returned, I am bf but with dd1 and dd2 they returned after 8mths and after about 15 mths with ds1 so maybe a scrape would sort that aspect of it out.

The reason I thought of that, was when I was on HRT while still having my periods at 50. My Gyny said the hormones in the pills could artificially stop my periods and that was not good as the lining would thicken and I'd need a scrape.
Just thought the BFing has a similar hormonal effect on ovulation/ periods and could mean a similar reaction? But as it was different with your firsr 2 DC, then I really do not know.

BUT my sis had no periods after her 2nd DC and turned out to be an underactive Thyroid gland.

I'm not sure, something isn't right I know that much but no idea what!

I think my insides are well and truly ruined after 4 caesareans. Hopefully the operation/scrape will help things and I will feel better as its a struggle with dcs when I have a day with a lot of pain, its odd I will have 24hrs with low abdo pain (like period pain) then a swollen stomach (I look pregnant!) And my cs scar swells then it settles down again.

Have a pre op appt next week. I've written out for dh everything ds2 does in a day/what he likes so that it'll be easy for him as think it'll be booked in for a couple of weeks.

I know it's easy to say but try not too worry too much about them saying they saw something on the scan, if you have polyps they won't show fully on an ultra sound and need a hysteroscopy to see and treat them.
The op is straight forward and doesn't take long. You might have some period type pains afterwards and they will give you pain relief.
The anaesthetic can make you feel tired and a bit fuzzy headed for 24 hours or so (hence instructions not to sign important documents straight afterwards!!).
You should feel back to normal in a few days, but I don't know if there are restrictions on breast feeding. Can you express each day before the op so there is some stored milk to feed your baby if necessary, especially the op day.
Hope it goes well and that the news is good. Come back and let us know how it all went. Make sure you can rest for a few days afterwards and get the sleep you need!

ariane5 · 29/05/2013 23:18

I think that's why I'm so worried-the vagueness of us scan and how the nurse said she didn't know what it was they had seen but that there was "a lot of fluid and very think endometrium".

I guess I just need them to check what it is and I need to stop worrying!

It's worrying going for scans because the sonographer is not able to give you results but may say something that makes you immediately want more information on that she can't give!
It's tough waiting for an op and to hear whats wrong but hoping it's something simple and straightforward.
