Burnt my finger on the oven a week ago and its very painful still ..

Its a circular burn on my index finger, below the knuckle.

The burnt skin came off in the bath , the raw skin is now covered by a hard yellow sscab. The outside of the burn seems to be getter redder and more painful.

There is no puss though, which indicates it isn't infected I think?

Will it heal? I don't want to waste a GPs time if a bit of savlon and a plaster will do the job.

Had to take the plaster off as it was throbbing and now I can hardly move my finger. Its gone stiff.

If its like it tomorrow, I will have to go to GPs I think

Sympathies. I burnt my thumb on a hot pan about a week and a half ago and it's only now healed up. It did hurt for a good few days. And it blistered.

I'm always catching my fingers on the oven. I'm bloody clumsy me. Hope it feels better soon.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 27/05/2013 23:35

Sorry that was no help whatsoever. I'd see a doctor, it doesn't sound quite right, especially if your finger has gone stiff. Does it have to show pus to be infected?

MrsLettuce · 27/05/2013 23:35

That sounds like a serious burn. it needs seeing too, special dressings and the like. Get yourself seen woman!

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/05/2013 23:38

Sounds infected. Get it seen asap. Try to keep elevated overnight (on pillows).

Bluebell99 · 27/05/2013 23:40

Sounds painful. And I don't think it should still be hurting after a week. I scalded my finger a month or do ago. It came up in a blister the next day. I bought some burns plasters, and after a week it was much better. Anything larger than a 50p should get medical attention. I'd get it looked at.

Agree - get it looked at, and get a small plant of Aloe Vera for the kitchen. Next burn, cut off a leaf, open it up and put gel on burn, covering with plaster or similar. No blister and no pain after few minutes.
Really hope it gets better soon.

How's your finger today frosty?

Startail · 28/05/2013 14:52

I managed to pour boiling water down my ankle boot. (Don't ask)

It scabbed over, cracked, weeped, hurt, itched, scab came off in the bath and was generally a pain for about six weeks.
This was before Easter and now there is just a ten pence sized dark mark. Burns are just a sodding nuisance, they take a long time to heal.

I wouldn't bother the doctor, but I'm a firm believer in avoiding doctors unless absolutely necessary.

frosty21 · 28/05/2013 18:13

Hi thanks for all the advice.

I still haven't made it actually to the doctors Blush.

The scab is hard now (it went all soft when I took the plaster off) and my finger isn't so stiff but its so painful to touch. The outside area is very red and puffy but I have stabbed it with a needle to see if any puss came out - it didn't, just blood, but I nearly went through the roof with the pain!

frosty just because there is no pus does not mean it's not infected. The anatomy of fingers/hand means that infection, when it takes hold, can spread deep within the tissues and cause serious damage.

Increasing pain/swelling/redness after any injury means infection until proven otherwise. Please get it looked at.

Bluebell99 · 28/05/2013 21:12

Omg frostie, you're a hard brave woman :) that sounds so painful, I hope you get it looked at, and let us know how you get on.

frosty21 · 28/05/2013 22:34

Boreofwhabyalon, you've worried me now. I'm going in town tomorrow anyway so will go into the local drop in centre to get them to have a look.

Red and puffy sounds like cellulitis. That'll need ABs. (I'm not a dr but I'd deffo go and see one)

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/05/2013 22:56

Don't want to scare you frosty but, from what you've said here, I do think it needs to be seen (am A&E/triage nurse).

frosty21 · 29/05/2013 15:41

Quick update; it is a full thickness burn and it is infected so I have antibiotics.

Thanks for all the advice and pushing me to get it checked. Thanks

Now, take better care of your injuries in future

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/05/2013 18:30

Glad to hear you've finally got some proper treatment Smile.
Hope it will soon be better.

MrsLettuce · 29/05/2013 19:44

(If you tend to do thinks like not get serious burns seen to like me, it's best to have suppies in your first aid box to dress them properly from the start quoth my GP)

Bluebell99 · 29/05/2013 23:31

Glad to hear you got it seen to. Hope it's better soon.
