Whooping cough vaccine while pregnant, worrying?

Just wondering if anyone else feeling reluctant to get the whooping cough vaccination now recommended for 28-38wks pregnant? I'm currently 20wks and really concerned about getting it, but guess I have plenty of time to make my mind up yet Confused. I had DD in the peak of a whooping cough epidemic back (last year) when it wasn't offered to pregnant women! She thankfully was fine and got her own vaccinations at 8wks etc Just wondering if I'm alone in stressing about this? Or should I just do as I'm told and get it?

My DS had whooping cough when he was 3 weeks old in July/August 2012. It was horrendous for him and me and he could have died. He was in hospital on oxygen for a few days. He would have coughing fits which would leave him blue, vomited after every feed, lost weight and the cough stayed for 6 months. It was before the pregnancy vaccine came in and he was part of the statistics that made them bring in the vaccine. It is no good saying that your sister didn't vaccinate and her kids were fine. The fact is that I was vaccinated as a child. For some reason either my immunity waned (as it did it many women) or the whooping cough strain has changed and the original vaccine was no longer sufficient. So the immunity did not pass to him in the womb. We do not know where he caught it from. He had only been to Tesco! My family were tested and it wasn't them. People are contagious with the whoop before they have symptoms so it's no good saying you will keep I'll people away. Watching my baby struggle for breath was heartbreaking and terrifying. I would urge anyone reading this to get the vaccine if it is offered to protect your baby.

I had the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine in pregnancy and developed severe skin reaction (which I still have months afterwards). Then I informed myself. This book is a must read for anyone especially when about to have children. www.amazon.com/Vaccination-Not-Immunization-Fourth-Edition/dp/1929487150

I got the flu and whooping cough when i was 30 weeks pregnant,
Not had a cold since and baby hasnt needed to be taken to the GP or anything ...
I have a happy, healthy 8 week old baby :)

Eldode · 06/04/2016 15:34

Keznel,

I'm wondering how things played out for you with this? Did you have the vaccine in the end?

SideOfFoot · 06/04/2016 18:31

mrsjoker, while the whooping cough and flu vaccines might protect from these diseases, neither will do anything to protect you from a cold. The fact that you have not had a cold since is a happy coincidence and nothing to do with the vaccines.

Good to hear that you have a happy, healthy baby.

I didn't have whooping cough vaccine or any other vaccine while pregnant and I was fine. My son is almost two and fine also. Others had the vaccine and they are also fine. You need to do what feels right for you and be at peace with your decision. Last thing you want to be doing is stressing when you're pregnant! Good luck with whatever you decide x

Hi guys came across this post as were currently deciding wether to have the WC vaccine.....ive always been pro-vaccination....HOWEVER ...our second boy is autistic...which has led to ALOT of reading.....the thing that concerns me is NOT the use or not use of mercury in the injections. ....its based on an article from jan 2016....a team of scientists believe they may have found the cause and cure for autism....currently in its animal testing phase. ..they have discovered that a particular autoimmune response from the mother damages the brain in development. .....the response was from a virus.....and upon introducing a virus mimicking acid into the pregnant mothers....this creates the immune response and all offspring were born autistic....and by blocking the immune response found the offspring all normal.........cpl of questions really...its still in its early stage and the scientists are keeping it close to their chests and have patented their methods so info is very scarce...........has anybody else heard of this?.....and is their any info out there concerning the exact immune response the body gives regards to this vaccine??

Hi guys I had the whooping cough jab at 32wks 2 day pregnant 3 days later my son was born 7 wks 2 days early by emergency c section due to me not feeling him move. He was born unresponsive they had no output for 3 mins (was born dead) and gave him heart compressions and adrenaline for 20 mins to get his oxygen levels and heart rate to an okay ish level but still struggled to stabilise(I got told that he wouldn't last the next few hours) him 9 hours later he went on to have multiple organ failure but is ok now apart from a few issues we have to go to the hospital for. I'm sure having this jab caused that to happen, has anyone else had anything happen like this..surely it can't be a coincidence xxx

butterfly92 · 22/09/2016 08:47

I declined the whooping cough vaccine as well as the flu jab. Im not having any toxins in my body while I am carrying a vulnerable baby, and also it hasn't been tested on pregnant woman so they don't know the long term effects. I'd rather do the cocooning method so I have asked if my partner and I can have it after my baby is born as We are due to have a booster anyway but they said no.. It's offered to PREGNANT woman only.

Fluffybrain · 01/11/2016 07:30

Butterfly the point of giving the whooping cough vaccine to pregnant women is that it protects your baby. Having it after the birth does not offer protection to your baby. Whooping cough is airborne. It only takes someone with it to be in same room as them or a few steps away to get it. It's not realistic to think that you can keep your baby away from everyone for 3 months after birth. You are going to need to go to the doctors for a 6 week check for example. If you had seen my baby blue faced, struggling to breath, vomiting and coughing you would be running to the doctors to get the vaccine.

PotteringAlong · 01/11/2016 07:38

Im not having any toxins in my body while I am carrying a vulnerable baby,

You're making your baby a whole lot more vulnerable by refusing the vaccine. Want to look after your children? Vaccinate. It's a no brainier.

Quininja2003 · 01/11/2016 07:50

This is why i asked the question above..which everyone's chosen to ignore, ive done alot of my own research on the subject now...in our circumstances (with an autistic child already) the small risk of whooping cough which can ve treated if caught early...against the very real higher chance of autism was a no brainer....not worth the risk of autism....its devestating watching our 3 year old battle with his autism daily

Fluffybrain · 01/11/2016 10:51

I am sorry for your child's circumstances. My nephew is severely autistic and I sympathise with you how difficult this is. However, I don't believe vaccines cause autism. You have quoted evidence of a link but there is much more research showing no link.
Babies under 3 months die of whooping cough. It's a life threatening disease. I feel very lucky that my baby survived it when others died that summer.

Quininja2003 · 01/11/2016 11:32

I know your talking about the link between vaccines and autism.....thats not the actual link...new research from jan 2016..believes that an increase of Interleaukin 17a protien in the pregnant mummies blood....or a very young baby......(a pro inflammitory response to any damage) so increases in this protien occur..when you bump your head...catch a virus or bacterial infection....smoking...eating gluten...stress...drinking alcohol........and vaccines ALL vaccines also increase this protein.....i do believe that this research is correct..everything seems to fit..its currently seeking human testing after its animal testing phase.....even down to less girls get autism............oestrogen actually reduces IL17a so that fits!......the point i was making really was that......vaccines arnt the cause...but may very well add to in a culamative way..with many other factors...the main one being that if you have ashtma (like my wife) ...psoriasis (like me) or arthritus then your body already isnt able to manage its IL17a production as these ailments are flair ups...when your IL17a are too high......i thourghly researched the whooping cough vaccine....instances of whooping cough....complications...chances..of complications arising etc....it was actually a difficult choice...we are Pro Vaccine!! .....but Flu vaccines are out for our kids!...and the whooping cough was also for our little girl.

Hello, I am going to be offered the Whooping Cough vaccine soon and I am unsure whether to have it or not. I have done my research and found that the vaccine contains aluminium. Aluminium has been linked to Autism and brain illnesses like Dementia. This is my first pregnancy and although I am not against vaccines, my line of work is supporting parents who have children with neurodevelopmental needs such as ASD and ADHD. There are a lot of children that appear to have SEN needs and I am worried this has escalated due to these kinds of vaccines? I have also found on the government website that the statistics for Whooping Cough are significantly low at the moment as a direct result of the pandemic and social distancing. Any advice would be most appreciated, thank you Smile

Where are you doing your ‘research’? No vaccines in the UK contain aluminium.

I know the stats and whopping cough are low but when I looked them up a couple of months ago (I had a weird cough) the stats were a good few months behind. How recent is the data?

Whopping cough vaccine was introduced in pregnancy after a number of new borns died as a result of contracting whopping cough.

missminimum · 03/03/2022 18:21

Whooping cough vaccine in pregnancy has been offered for the last few years. This came after another whooping cough spike and newborn babies were becoming infected, before old enough to get their routine one at 8 weeks, there were also significant numbers of pregnant mothers and postnatal mothers getting it. Initially, as it was unexpected drs were missing that this was what it was, as newborn symptoms can be hard to differentiate from similar infections. Young babies were becoming seriously ill when only a few days or weeks old, ending very unwell in hospital. Remember this is an illness that can cause brain damage in some. Since pregnant women were offered the vaccine in pregnancy the incident has reduced but whooping cough has a tendency to have spikes in infection rates every few years. It is worth discussing with your midwife or GP if you are not sure
