Anyone else got a huge baby?

I know I shouldnt take too much notice of those blasted centile charts.... but..... as I've started to notice how quickly my dd is outgrowing clothes i thought i should measure her and then I looked on the chart... shes well over the 99.6 percentile line for height.... 68cms at 15 weeks... the chart says to consult peadiatrician (sp) if over this line. She is 15 weeks and is too large for most of her 3-6 month clothes... and fits into 6-9month vests...and she not even 4 months.... what do you reckon??

My DD2 and DS were both enormous, no one ever considered it to be aproblem so i wouldn't worry. The only problem i had was trying to bath them or carry them any where. Once she starts to get a bit more activ the weight will gradually fall off anyway.

bobsmum · 30/01/2004 23:19

Fantastically healthy dd IMO. Sounds like she's doing brilliantly. IIRC centile charts were drawn up in the 1960s and we're all a heck of a lot bigger 40 years down the line - worry not! Although you'll have to fork out for clothes.

Have a look at the "vest extenders" that thebabycatalogue.com sell - they'll add another couple of month's wear to bodysuit vesty type things - invaluable for big bubbas (I've got a big ds!). All the best

Gem13 · 30/01/2004 23:26

DS was off the height scale when he was born and was in 3-6 month clothes in his first week. Can't remember when he went into the next size but he's never been 'right' for his age.

He's not so amazingly long/tall anymore (now 18 months although some of his clothes are for 3 year olds!) but has always been around the 91 and 99 centiles.

All of the men in the family are around 6'3 though, both grandfathers, 3 uncles and DH so it's not really suprising. The women are all 5'7 or above too.

Are you or her father tall?

princesspeahead · 30/01/2004 23:31

sounds fine. my ds is now 19 weeks and filling up gap 6-12 month clothes. he grew out of all his 3-6months clothes at christmas. he isn't 5 months for another 10 days!

are you and your dh tall? ask your mum if you were a big baby. if you are still worried mention it to your hv but I wouldn't worry, she sounds lovely!

Spod · 31/01/2004 01:00

yes, dh is 6'2" and I'm 5'7" so a tall baby was expected I guess.... nice to know there are others.... thanx for the vest extenders tip... fortunately I'm inheriting most of the clothes from sisters kiddie... and altho they were born smaller and at different time of year my dd has caught up.....

my ds was huge too, 98 centile for height, and in 3-6 clothes at just a few weeks. We are both tall and my family very tall, and he was obviously healthy, so I've never worried. Now at 13 months, he is more in the right clothes for his age, but still at the top of the centiles.
She sounds lovely, healthy and strong, actually I often think it has been an advantage being bigger, and rather that than worrying about an underweight baby.

One thing I did find (took me ages to realise, bit dim) was that he outgrew all his sleepsuits months early, because his feet were so long, rather than size in general. My friend's baby outgrew them because she was very long legged.(a positive advantage for a girl!) Trousers were hopeless for ds because he has such a skinny waist, but is tall. I changed to footless sleepsuits, and dungarees, and stopped worrying about what size they were.

coppertop · 31/01/2004 08:42

Your dd sounds fine to me. Ds1 was a big baby. He was so long that his first ever sleepsuit was a 3-6 months size. I was stopped by the truancy officers for the first time when he was 2yrs old and asked why he wasn't in school! Now at 3.6yrs he wears 5-6yrs clothes and has size 11 feet. Dh is well over 6ft tall.

TheBoysMum · 31/01/2004 09:20

ds1 was born at just over 9lbs, he is very stocky and is now on the 98th percentile for weight. He is not fat.
ds2 on the other hand was born early, was much smaller and is just below 25th percentile for weight.
I tend to ignore the charts. I reckon ds1 will grow up to be a really stocky lad and your lass will be lovely and tall.
Neither of my sons have ever fitted the clothes that were meant for their age.

hercules · 31/01/2004 09:45

my dd is 16 weeks and is too long for her 3-6 month cloths and has been in 6-12 ones for a week now. ds was also tall .

fimbles · 31/01/2004 14:24

My dd,nearly 20 months is the size of a 3 yr old. when she is in the park, older children try to talk to her and ofcourse she cannot communicate with them yet and gets upset. I myself am very tall, 5'9, dh the same. Strangely enough she wears the correct clothing for her age - 18-24! She is very stocky, no fat, unbelievably strong and as for the centile chart, there isn't a place left to indicate her height! So you are not alone. I was told by hv that when the child is 2 yrs old, multiply their height by 2 to get the final height. My dd is 92 cms so she is probably going to be 6ft or over!!

suzywong · 31/01/2004 14:39

Same as all the others Spod
Both mine were great big chunky babies, DS1 now average height but still solid, lean and active and no means fat but weighs 2stone 9lbs and 2.9 yrs and baby DS2 is 5 months, on the 91 st centile and has been in 6-9 months clothes since he was 3 months old.
So good for you, you must be dishing out fantastic nourishment, in utero too.

popsycal · 31/01/2004 18:52

I haev a chunky but gorgeous 18months old ds who i got on the scales with today and I ran to check his yellow book and looked at the centile graph - he is somewhere between 30 and 32 lbs....

I spent an hour stressing then put it out of my mind. He is healthy, intelligent and will eat anything I give him. Reading some of the mums on here whose little ones won't eat I am truely glad that I have a chunky monkey.
Bin the centile charts...
We should have a mass burning of them!!

popsycal · 31/01/2004 18:53

And in terms of strength, he can push the sofa and his little tikes slide!!!

charlieplus3 · 31/01/2004 19:30

I have a big baby boy and i could just cuddle him all day. Hes so squeezy and lovable.Nearly 5 mths and fitting his 6 - 9 mths clothes a bit too well.

Spod · 01/02/2004 12:03

great... burn the charts then!!!!

Beccarollover · 01/02/2004 12:22

popsys littleun is soo lovely and not too "huge" at all - he is a very sweet little thing that looks just like a cherub - complete with golden curls!

Dinny · 01/02/2004 12:49

I weighed dd the other day as she seemed really heavy to lift and she's 28lbs (21 months, fairly tall). Seems a lot - dunno what the average is as don't have red book with me.

popsycal · 01/02/2004 21:49

aaawwwh - thank you becca!!!
you are lovely!

popsycal · 01/02/2004 21:54

dinny - that sounds fine to me!!!
ds 18 mths at least 30lbs...

incywincy · 02/02/2004 00:28

dinny - agree with popsycal. my ds is 18 months and weighs over 30lbs. some of his clothes are 3 years plus as he has a lovely fat baby belly (however i would say he's stocky / solid rather than fat) . some days he eats some days he doesn't, but he still breast feeds a lot.

misdee · 02/02/2004 23:06

dd2 is a big girl. last weighed around 32-33lb and is just 17months old. she is just a couple of cm shorter than her older sister who is 4years old next month. makes shopping for clothes easier as they were the same size.

MBB · 03/02/2004 13:27

DD is 18lbs at 14 weeks and into 6-9 month clothes. she's not fat as such, just big all over (only a few pounds lighter than 20 mnth DS). I'm only 5'3" and DH is just 6'.

pollingfold · 03/02/2004 13:43

Spod

I agree with the others burn the charts. My DS has always been off the chart heightwise and near the up levels in the weight.

We're not all the same so why should babies be?

The one thing you will find however is that other people will assume that your DD is older than she is and have expectations of her doing this and that. My DS is only 14 months but everyone thinks he's 2 and wonders why he isn't talking!! I just shrug and remember how fortunate we are not to having to worry about weight gain/ growth rates like others, while giving DS a big hug

steppemum · 03/02/2004 15:10

just remembered something that I thought you'd like. When I was at college a friend of mine had a baby, a huge fat dumpling of a baby, (actually not a pretty baby at all) BUT when she was 18 months her little round face was like a cherub with dimples and soft curls, she was the cutest toddler you've ever seen (of course my ds hadn't been born then )

marthamoo · 03/02/2004 15:16

Definitely ignore those stupid centile charts - they only put them in to give you something else to worry about..

"oh, my baby's too big...too small..too AVERAGE!"

She sounds perfect to me
