strep throat

OK I have just googled this (and scared myself silly with articles about rheumatic fever n stuff). But I'm pretty sure dd has strep throat and ds probably had it too (and probably gave it to everyone at nursery ). doc didn't do a swab test but showed me dd's throat which had pus everywhere. she's on amoxylin.

so does anyone know (without googling!):
do adults get strep throat with different symptoms? (only dh is ill too, but not with a sore throat)

Poor dd (and ds) - can't google anyway so am grilling dh instead but he's speaking too fast for me to type (he has a book...)

Basically, the bug that causes strep throat can cause zillions of other things so yes, dh could have the bug but not have a sore throat. What are his symptoms?

marthamoo · 22/05/2006 21:00

I mean, google is down, not that I can't google - you know I can google.

moondog · 22/05/2006 21:07

I thought only Americans got 'strep throat'??

LIZS · 22/05/2006 21:07

yes adults can get strep throat. Often there are symptoms such a throbbing headache across the forehead and sickness. Same infection can cause Scarlet Fever too.

rummum · 22/05/2006 21:08

I agree with moondog... I've only ever heard of my American Aunt and Uncle having strep throat... I'm off to google it... [cos I can]

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2006 21:10

streptoccus causes tonsillities, scarletinea etc.

I had strep as adult (even tho no tonsils and very painful)

Ds was very poorly with scarletina at xmas and centre for diseases had to be informed.

Sounds like your dd has tonisllities - pussy throat. Check for strawberry tongue and v red rash - usually starting in pant area also watch for high fever,

re hubby what are his symptons? may be man flu Grin

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2006 21:11

liz - snap

chapsmum · 22/05/2006 21:11

step infections are teh most common infections around. streptococcil A B and C ae carried in the noses and thoats of a significan part of the population. Most of the time the bacteria lyes there not cuasing infection but just sitting. Occasionaly the infecction will entre a scratch or wound in an area like the throat and cause infection.
I think if most bacterial cases of tonsilitus were swabbed a majority of them would be from a strep bacteria.
It is very treatable. what have you found thats worrying you???

SenoraPostrophe · 22/05/2006 21:21

thanks everyone.

the stuff that worries me is the stuff about rheumatic fever.

But anyway yes, both kids have had very high temps (39-40 - dd's was 39 and didn't go down with the first dose of paracetemol - had car keys ready to take her to hospital at one point but found it went down with ibuprofen as well).

dh has stonkin headache and can't stand bright lights. but he also has horrific hay fever this year too so not sure how much is that. we think he has a mild temp, but haven't used this thermometer on him normally iyswim. he has just told me he doesn't have his health care card and we are only in the process of getting him registered for healthcare. tempted to just buy him some antibiotics.

ps I had strep throat when little - that's what made me think of it and would explain why i'm the only well person in the house.

sp be wary of taking antibiotics when there is no obvious cause of infection. They will not help his body to fight a virus.
Try the basics for him. PLENTY of fluids, paracetamol and ibuprofen. Have a look in his throat to see if his tonsils are red/ spotty /pussy. The tonsils are at either side at the back of the thraot.
If he really has no obvious source of infection I would really not buy him antibiotics.

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2006 21:45

chaps - she said it was pussy. When it is streptoccous you need anti-b as not a virus but bacteria.

Got told initally (emergency in PEAU) that ds having allergic reaction to virus - turned out scarletina

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2006 21:48

senora - the bright light thing worries me. Sorry but scareltina and streppteccol can develop into meningiccocal (meningitis) as same bacteria. Has dp got a purple rash. tbh i would personally call dr as bright light thing. Better to be safe.

Sorry for you sounds like you have a lot to deal with tonight. Let us know how it goes. x

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2006 21:49

{blush} sorry chaps for typo - i meant alot of puss

chapsmum · 22/05/2006 21:49

awen, have read again and correct me if I'm wrong but she said her dd throat was pussy not dp's???
have no problem with antibs prescribed by a dr for baterial tonsilitis but not just bought for someone who has 'flu' lik symptoms IYSWIM.

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2006 21:49

pus Blush sp

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2006 21:51

soz - though it was ds

Orlando · 22/05/2006 22:01

I had strep throat a few years ago (aged 30ish). My symptoms were basically the worst sore throat imaginable, and the ulvula(?? is that what the hangy down cartoon bit is called?) swelled up to ginormous proportions. It came in the wake of a very long bout sinusitis, with headache and loads and loads of pus... (lovely) Maybe your dh will get the sore throat later?

If it makes you feel any better, mine did go within a week or so and left no lasting effects.

Hope everyone in your house gets better soon!

SenoraPostrophe · 23/05/2006 09:08

thanks again. we'll wait and see for dh then. hopefully his registration will come through today or tomorrow (but I can't rely on that).

chapsmum - I know that antibiotics shouldn't be bandied about. But I am rather more happy to give them now since dd got mastoiditis 2 years ago (apparently a complication of an untreated ear infection). dd slightly better today.

chapsmum · 23/05/2006 12:38

Hey SP my reference to giving ab's were directed at your dh not your dd.
Hope they both feel better soon.
