ds to be circumcised

Don't want to start an argument about circumcision here.

Just got back from hospital with ds and he is to be circumcised in July (medical reasons.....)

Can anyone please reassure me that he won't hate me forever and grow up emotionally and physically damaged??? Please don't post if you are going to tell me anything real awful.....

Have been told by consultant there is no choice. It needs doing, and soon.

Also have added worry that he has sickle cell trait (issue with anaesthetic) so not feeling too good about the whole thing Sad

How will he be afterwards? I am so squeamish........

HELP!!

thanks Sari. I hope that they say it will be all ok. He tried again to retract it tonight but only managed a little way before it hurt. tbh it looks sore when he pulls it back but dont know what is normal.

Better to be done the younger they are I think. My ds2 was rushed into hospital a few weeks ago, they thought they were going to have to operate immediately (he's 6mths now), but as his nappies were wet they decided to wait a few weeks in the hope that his foreskin loosened off by itself. Luckily it has a bit and he's not in the discomfort he was, but wee still only trickles out. He still may have to be circumcised, but is the norm in so many cultures that I'm not unduly worried if he does.

he'll be fine if you are fine. but if you are very stressed about it, then so will he be.
get him lots of treats, and help him to keep the area clean and dry afterwards.

I agree GG. I do think though that you need to give it time to see if it rectifys itself. Some things do....... it's not a decision I've taken lightly as it's against everything I believe in.

Hopefully your ds's will sort itself out, he's still very little. Looking back though, ds's has always been like this,I remember asking my dad to look at it when he was very tiny Blush due to the shape (the ballooning)

stitch, I know you are right. I will try to calm down about it. Ds seems fine atm. It's his birthday the week after the op so he will be getting an extra present or two! Smile

Happy - ballooning was quite extreme with his, to the size of his fist, hence the OMG from drs! He was in a bit of discomfort for a while, but thats settled down. I'm keeping fingers crossed it does rectify itself, but def don't want to hang around til he's a teenager. Sending your LO into hospital's going to be worrying at any time, and for a general anaesthetic is gonna be so scary, but have reassurance that he'll only be under for such a short time, and he'll be well looked after the whole time. It'll be much less painful for him now than it would be in say 6 or 7 years time. Good luck tho for your ds, I'm sure he will get through it fine, and enjoy you looking after him once he's home! Wink.

HappyMumof2 · 22/05/2006 22:10

Thanks, yes, I'm sure he will milk it for all it's worth Wink

Hope things work out okay for you and your ds Smile

Sorry for being thick but what do you mean by the foreskin retracting (or not)? Is this somethilng I should be aware of in a 2 year old??

Can't ask dh as he doesn't have one!

Sari · 22/05/2006 22:37

I've just realised I got my statistic the wrong way round earlier on. I meant to say that 75% of six year olds have foreskins that do retract, 25% don't.

Mercy, a boy should be able to pull the foreskin back over the head of his willy, but not when he is very young. It will happen gradually, you shouldn't try to force it.

Mercy · 22/05/2006 22:43

Sari, thanks. Will leave well alone then!

Happy Mum. My ds had his done at the age of 6 Like you and the others MN's sons, my ds had steriod cream, the waiting game, the pull and stretch game and finally the op. The op went smoothly, he recovered brilliantly and there is no more tightness/pain. He wore boxer shorts to give the 'general and two men' some air and space to heal. If you have any worries about the op, the sickle cell or the after care - talk to the doctors/nurses. Good Luck Wink
