Help! How to put weight on healthily

I've always lost weight far too easily, lingered around the lower healthy side of bmi/ sometimes a bit borderline. I've given myself a shock tonight by stepping on the scales for the first time in about two months and I'm a weight I don't think I've been since a teenager. After checking my bmi is 17.9.

I know it's not caused by any underlying health problems as chances are it's my poor diet of a lone parent always running after the kids before myself, a baby that won't sleep during the day unless in the buggy (hence two-three hour walks per day) and moving house.

I don't want to be this skinny. I think it looks awful on me. How can I put weight on healthily without scoffing loads of cholesterol filled stuff (high cholesterol/heart attacks/high bp a family trait)?

I went thru a period where I was far too skinny and ended up eating the wrong kinds of foods for months I did put on weight but ended up getting a bit of a belly! Further down the line I found that protein foods are good at helping with this (my fiancee has a lot of knowledge with weights and diet)

Hope this helps

Hi. Try more protein and carbs in the plate. Slightly bigger portions. Fish pie instead of grilled fish, potatoes roasted in olive oil instead of boiled, butter on veg, milkshakes, avocado on toast. I'm always slack on eating properly when I haven't done a supermarket shop - that's when I'll have toast for dinner. Maybe set up a regular online order so you always have loads of food to make proper meals.

If you're really struggling you might be able to find nutritional drinks which are very high calorie and used by people recovering from illness. Think there's one called Boost. Might find them in the pharmacy at your local hospital.

My weight remained stable at 7.9 stone, but Suddenly I noticed I was down to 7.3. 5'2". It didn't bother me until I began to feel 'strange'.

I had an overactive Thyroid Gland and went down to 6.3 despite eating ravenously all high calorie foods which my brain was telling my appetite it wanted < needed>.

Have your Thyroid checked just incase.

I lost a lot of weight last year (illness, stress etc) and was surprised how hard I found the regaining it. Some healthy shortcuts I found

  • things sprinkled on top of something else eg grated cheese on pasta, olive oil on salad, nuts on yoghurt etc
  • smoothies, milkshakes, lattes etc Grin - plenty of calories but not too filling and usually fairly healthy (ish)
  • learning to cook/bake something new - you might nibble! I do, anyway

Years later, after DH died of cancer, I lost weight again, and despite eating sweets galore, didn't put an ounce on.
However, what did help was eating a whole large bar of Toblerone chocolate every other night. I was eating normal food too.

Some people find it hard to lose weight and others lose it when stressed and can't put it back on .
