Not me but bump for Chicagomum (she's a dentist) Smile

good luck.

I'm Chicagomum btw but have changed my name. It really is the best route to do it under sedation as he/she will have very little recollection (if any) about what went on and thus it won't harm their expectations of further visits to the dentist. It is a very quick proceedure and the recovery is also quick.

Hi, my dd had two teeth out after an accident when she was 2.5. It was done under general anaesthetic - is that what your child is having or is sedation something different? I was really scared beforehand but the procedure was v quick and she was fine afterwards - not in any pain tho eating was difficult for a while. I think it should be even easier at 4 yrs as I've heard the roots of the teeth shrink as they get older - which is how come they eventually fall out. Only bad bit was her being put to sleep, but with a 4 yr old might be easier as you can explain what's happening and hopefully get her co-operation. My dd needed 3 of us to hold her down which was awful!

DD1 has had 2 teeth out with sedation at 6 and 8. Both times it was absolutely a good experience for her thank goodness and she was not even remotely bothered the 2nd time because, "I know there's nothing to it!" She was more concerned about what stickers she would get!!

Thanks for replies I feel a little better about it now, what would happen though if I just left it? Wouldn't it come out soon anyway?

Depends which tooth it is. First baby teeth are lost around 6, but the last ones are into the early teens.

wow what a coincidence ds is having treatment under sedation next wednesday. he is 14 though he still had a baby tooth and they were going to take it out but it came out yesterday! still has a crwon and filling to be done(bike accident)

southeastastra · 16/05/2006 22:33

It's a pre molar, that has been ground down.

There are no premolars in baby teeth. You have (in each quarter of the mouth) 2 incisors, a canine and 2 molars.

southeastastra · 16/05/2006 22:43

a canine

If it is the canine (3rd tooth from the midline) then it will probably stay until the child is 9-10 so a fair while yet.

Just want to say son had two teeth taken out yesterday (one was an abcess which dentist thought was a broken tooth), with sedation, he was in and out really quick and back at school today.

I was wrong they were molars! Thanks to ComeOVeneer where else can you talk to a dentist but mn! Ta Loads.

My DD (then aged 3 years 9 months) had 6 teeth taken out under general anaesthetic. She has a few "issues" and was referred to the hospital. They said they would put her to sleep and do what needed to be done. She had 2 teeth fused in the front (part of her condition) and an overcrowded mouth.

She had to have a pre-med as she was very "anti" the doctors - (and the aneastheologist (sp?) was very unsympathetic to her and her condition - had never met her before).

When she came round after the operation, she was so very grumpy - like a nasty drunk but that was because of the pre-med.

We were allowed home about 2 hours after she came out of the recovery room. I carried my DD to the car as she was still a bit unsteady on her feet from the aneasthetic and when I got to the car it looked like us both had been in a bad accident - but then it didn't seem too bad as we were on hospital grounds. It would have been worse if we were just walking out on the street. We were both covered in blood - my DD where she was drooling (and it was dripping onto her clothes) and my shoulders and top where her head was resting against my shoulder.

They gave me a cardboard kidney dish to take home with us in the car. I only live about 5-10 minutes drive from the hospital.

Gave us no real aftercare advice. Got indoors and was on the phone to my boyfriend (not her dad) to tell him we were back home and while I was on the phone, my DD coughed and vomited black thick blood all over herself and the carpet.

I rang the hospital straight away and they said "oh, don't worry, that is perfectly normal because of the amount of blood that she would have swallowed". Wish they had told me that before hand as I panicked big time.

She, at that time, went to daycare. Had one day at home and was back at daycare the second day after having 6 teeth out.
