dd has had terrible eczema for past 4 years has had high dose steroid wet wraps the works I started giving her cod liver oil(orange flavoured) two weeks ago, after watching child of our time and her eczema has gone completely from being red dry covering 90% of body to having a small patch on her leg her skin is immaculate and soft. I have also started giving her probiotic yogurt drinks. anyone else tried this?

Ds at around 10-12 months had reaally dry rough skin, abit like sandpaper. Anyway, someone suggested cod liver oil to 'grease him up from the inside.' When I got to Boots, the lady said he couldn't have cod liver as he was too young and promptly sold me a bottle of Eye-Q. I was abit sceptical, especially at £10 a bottle. But hey presto, his skin's lovely. He's now 2.5, since hearing about the benefits of the fish oil, he still has it.

Since taking eye Q a week ago ds1 's skin has flared up again. But this may be due to the weather.

I started taking fish oil myself, hoping that DS might get it thru my breastmilk. At first I thought I saw a good improvement, but then we had a flare up bought on by flying. I wonder if fish oil can really cross over to my breastmilk? I also wonder wheather I could break open the soft capsule and put some directly in his food. DS is 1. What do you guys think? I am going to see a different dermatologist on Thursday and will talk to him about it (if he can speak english) and let you know what he says.

so am i right in thinking - cod liver oil helps with eczema - my dd is 22months and is very poorly with it at the mo.

Does anyone know if babies have to be a certain age before you can start giving them omega-3 oils (fish oils or veggie equivalent) and/or probiotics? My ds is 6 months, has eczema. I'm taking both in the hope he gets them via breastmilk but would like to add directly to his food .. but wonder if it could be too soon?

AussieSim · 28/01/2004 20:58

Thanks robinw and maryz. I'm continuing with the fish oil for myself, and am seeing a new doctor with DS tomorrow and will let you know what he says.

I started washing his raw bits today with a mixture of lavender and olive oil diluted in milk then warm water. I thought the antiseptic effect of the lavender might be better then just warm water, what do you guys think?

eddm. I give my ds flax seed oil, but it took almost two bottles before we started noticing the difference. I started at 7 months. I also take flax seed, fish oil and evening primrose oil along with probiotics and breastfeed him. He is looking pretty good at the moment.

eddm · 29/01/2004 00:16

thanks Bob, I'll risk trying to open one of my flax seed oil capsules and adding it to his breakfast then! (only on cold food though I gather goes rancid if heated)

bobthebaby · 29/01/2004 00:40

Yes, there isn't much in a capsule though. I buy a bottle which you have to keep in the fridge and use a desert spoon in his lunch. I have also had good results putting a capsules worth on his skin when it is very red. It's very soothing.

Does anyone know if fish oil or probiotics (yakult) make it through my breastmilk to DS?

bobthebaby · 31/01/2004 17:28

I take probiotics and EFA's and since I got up to a reasonable dose my ds's eczema has really improved. There are probiotics naturally in breastmilk, by taking more you are boosting them. I take tablets rather than Yakult, partly because I don't eat dairy but mainly because they don't sell them in NZ. I don't know if there is a difference in the number of active bacteria. Robinw told me that it takes up to 3 months for EFA levels to get up, and that would be consistent with when we started to see some results.

I supplement ds directly as well, we can get probiotic powder in a tin for babies here, and I use organic flax seed oilon his food.

The trouble with knowing if they work is that it could just be an improvement brought on by getting older, still they do no harm (except to wallet)and they do help me think I am "doing something" to help.

I read a suggestion on another thread about bathing in oats, and this seems really good too.

Thanks robinw, I think I will sign up, and next time I'm pregnant I'll be definitely taking fish oil and probiotics.
