I know there are various threads about this already but can some of you please help with what gives you motivation or indeed once you have started the dreaded diet/healthy eating plan!! to keep on going. I find myself every single week starting over as I just cannot stick to anything. I am at my absolute heaviest now including being pregnant and feel so ugly/fat and old for want of a better expression. I dont want to be anything ridiculous like a size 10/12 a size 14 would be just fine as some shops only sell clothes up to a size 14 - I need to lose about 2 stones - not a lot of time for exercise also because of work/son etc etc - any suggestions?

Suew - you've inspired me to give aqua aerobics a go, my abs definitely could do with it. Did go to the gym tonight though and did 20 mins on the x-trainer - that is very good for tubby little me! Will feel less guilty when I eat my takeaway curry tonight (yes, I know I shouldn't be having that on Atkins - but I'm having a little break this weekend, just don't tell anyone!)

Suew, just reading your msg after putting crisp in mouth - I'm definitely starting TOMORROW!!

Wish I could fit in aqua aerobics, but pool times are all out of sync with my day - I would seriously love to do it though, seriously!

Me too - I'm starting very gradually, instead of a bacon butty every morning, I'll only have one on a Friday, other mornings will be toast.

BTW Lizzer, how did the date go?

Willow2 · 28/01/2002 14:19

Ailsa, get on the slimming world tip and you can have your bacon buttie or sausage buttie at that. Just use lean bacon (cut fat off) or low fat sausages, wholemeal bread and low fat spread - oh and a dollop of ketchup. Have lost nearly three stone with slimming world (and have underactive thryoid gland - was over but had it whipped out - so know what you are going through) and can't tell you how many of the above I have scoffed!

Willow2,

changing the point of this thread for a moment, a few questions,

Did you have the radioactive iodine treatment first?

Were you given the option of iodine or operation? I don't really want the iodine treatment as I'll have to make arrangements for the kids to stay with MIL, and, there are a few women at work who could possibly be pregnant.

How was the op? How long did it take for you to recover?

Was your voice affected? (not that I'm bothered, as long as I can talk)

Sorry for interrupting this thread everyone.

Willow2, well done on your very impressive weight loss.
My sister gained a lot of weight, had bloods checked for underactive thyroid,(negative) and said " I don't have an underactive thyriod, I've got an overactive mouth!"

Willow2 · 30/01/2002 21:31

Ailsa - it was horribly overactive to start with but didn't realise (just thought I was really stressed) then fab doctor picked up on it and hey presto, discovered I was too ill to have an operation at that point as heart had been under so much stress, so had to take several months off work, neck handfuls of tablets (betablockers I suppose) and after a couple of months had the op. Was in hospital for about ten days. Wasn't a whole lot of laughs, but not the end of the world. (If you have it be prepared for the fact that you will probably come round to find plastic tubes stuck into your neck to help drain off excess fluid - these get taken out after several days or so - again not particularly painful but a bit of an eyeful if you haven't been expecting them). I was only 20 at the time so probably found it harder to deal with than would now (apart from anything I'd enjoy the rest!). Didn't have a problem with my voice but am aware there is a risk of damage to vocal chords. Can't remember how long I was at home recuperating afterwards (as long as possible I should imagine as I didn't want to go back to work!) but most people don't even notice the scar now. Where are you based and would you be having the op on the NHS or privately? If you are in or around London and (here's the downside) have health insurance I can recommend a brilliant surgeon.
