DD1 went to bed at 7:30 and hasn't stopped coughing since. We have all had a bit of a cold this week so I was expecting it. With dd2 it's easier because she's asthmatic so we just use her inhalers and she's fine. So far i've given her tixylix tickly cough medcine, 2 extra pillows, blown her nose and given her a drink but she's still coughing. Dp is starting to get more an more ratty about it. What else can i do ???

Is her nose bunged up? This might be making the coughing worse. Try a decongestant (e.g. Karvol on a tissue or in a bowl of hot water, or Vicks Vaporub on her chest and back) if you have any. Or you could try boiling a kettle in her room with the lid off - humidifying the air should loosen nasal congestion.

HTH.

Her nose is runny i think. Which is why she's coughing. Poor thing will be knackered if she carries on like that all night. I went in to her at 9:30 and she hadn't even been to sleep yet because of the coughing.

Poor little petal, it's no fun is it (one of my friends' kids had a cough like that which rattled through the house annoying everyone. Her mum took her to the doctor. Doctor says, so my dear, what seems to be the trouble? 3 year old Hester says 'I've got this f***g cough'. Well that's how everyone else referred to it)
But that doesn't help your DD1 does it?
All I can say is DS1 has the same thing, was up 90 minutes last night with it but bright as a button during the day. I guess tea and sympathy, so to speak and it does sound like the post-nasal drip is aggravating her passages. It sounds like you are doing the best you can.
Tell DP to bog off, so to speak

NO good for tonight, but go into boots tomorrw and but the Karvol plug in vaporiser.
It seems to help my dD when he is full of the snuffles

there is a foul bug doing the rounds that presents as the most horrendous cough. DS had it and, at his worst, was coughing every other second. There is little you can do other than neurofen (helps if they have a sore throat) as far as medication goes. Best tip is to buy a steamer for your daughter's room and put it on at night - the difference is remarkable.

No good for tonight if you don't have any in the house but if she really just cannot get to sleep for coughing you could also try something like Medised which is paracetamol and a sedating antihistamine. It should dry up the runny nose and might knock her out. It is a pharmacy only product. A warning: it tastes horrible and ds tends to refuse other medicines for some time after I've given him some cos he doesn't trust me. Also, you mustn't use it with any other paracetamol-containing products.

Have you tried paracetamol BTW? For some reason it does seem to aid sleep. You sound a bit desperate (and I'm not surprised) and you might just find it works.

Nutty, if you can get OLBAS oil it is also fantastic, you can put a few drops in a burner with a tealight and it will help. You can also massage a bit on her chest. If you can get her to lay on her tummy, you can also massage down both sides of her spine for a start, then you can turn her over, proped on pillows and massage her chest gently. The post nasal drip is just awful. You may have to sleep with her propped up in a chair tonight. Sorry for you..hope she will be better tomorrow. XX

Nutcracker, I've got a humidifier, if you'd like it you're welcome to it. I got it from John Bell & Croydon in London - it's not a steam one, cold humidifier so it won't steam up everything.

Thanx for the advice everyone. She did cough for most of the night and when I went to wake her for school she was spark out so i left her and went back to bed. She's o.k in herself, just very tired. The cough seems a bit more chesty than tickly this morning so hopefully it won't irritate her as much. She's definatley not ill though, she's just whacked her sister round the head with a stick.

Nutcracker....this is a weird remedy that my sister in Spain uses...she swears by it.

Slice up an onion on a plate and sprinkle with brown sugar. Leave in the bedroom overnight.......very smelly but she says it works!

HTH

nutcracker, my dd has been coughing like that for a week, (as have her two cousins). I was using tixylix but for the last two nights have used Veenos and she's slept a bit better! The Vix vapour rub is quite good too I hope she feels better soon, i can't wait for dd to get better! As you say though, she's fine in herself just an awful cough.

Angeliz · 27/01/2004 14:55

Luckymum, i think i'll try that too

nutcracker · 27/01/2004 15:21

Have been and bought some medised as ds has now got a runny nose and cough too. I may try thr onion thing though just to see if it works
Thanx for the advice
