Snoring, does anything work to stop it?

Dp snores very loudly at times. He snores all the time but sometimes it's very loud.

I've read of the sprays but do they work? He's willing to try them but I said I'll ask Mn first Wink

dp has tried: snore strips (across bridge of nose)
spray
being poked in ribs
acupressure snore-ring
gel thing you stick in roof of mouth

He's not overweight, and doesn't snore non-stop but it is definitely getting worse with middle-age!

The snore-strips work the best (along with being poked in the ribs, but by that time I'm already awake Hmm)

DH tried everything, and I mean everything, so I asked him to get his GP to make a referral to the snore clinic or something like that!

He does not smoke, is not overweight, but, they discovered he has sleep apnoea, and it transpires he stops breathing every 3 minutes for 50 seconds! This cold cause heart disease and many other problems.

He now has a Cpap machine and doesn't snore anymore, apparently he will also have a lot more energy and will be bouncing round like a duracell bunny!

SirChenjin · 23/04/2013 12:56

Nope - dh tried every gadget on the market, but was eventually referred to a sleep clinic where they discovered he had very bad apnoea. He's got a cpap machine which means no more snoring - result! He forgot to take it on a weekend away recently and we were all ready to kill him - we'd forgotten how noisy his snoring was.

Ear plugs for when we have to sleep together, rest of the time seperate rooms.

Ironic thing is that since I hit the menopause I've started to snore too and now I wake myself up snoring.

msrisotto · 23/04/2013 12:58

Why does the spray thing only work for 7 weeks?

sheeplikessleep · 23/04/2013 13:01

I'm 21 weeks pregnant and apparently snoring very loudly!

DH reckons he is getting next to no sleep at the moment.

Watching with interest ...

bit of an issue in this house too, although for medication reasons rather than weight.

ideas: a 'nozovent' takes some getting used to, but can work. Beyond that or the separate bedroom, there are more drastic solutions involving trimming the uvula. Also; drink of water before bed (not wine) to stop dry throat.

not wasting the doctor's time to get him checked up.

mindingalongtime · 24/04/2013 10:47

DH was told the uvula op was not always very successful and can cause more problems, and after someone local to us died after the op, I wouldn't let him entertain the idea.

I've just spent 800 Boots points on that spray for me Blush so it'd better bloody work!

BadBuddha · 24/04/2013 13:56

DP was a couple of stone overweight and a really bad snorer for years. He recently lost the weight and got fit (because of high blood pressure) and the snoring has stopped, completely. Win win :)

My husband’s snoring left me awake many nights. I got a Stella White snoring guard for him and not I can sleep a lot better ;)
