To think I'm gonna bleed to death? tmi alert

Ok bit of a daft AIBU, but needed a quick answer.
Due on this week, period as normal for past 2 days, this evening its been pouring out of me, especially when I stand up. Is this normal?
I had my friend and her partner round, I stood up and my cream fabric sofa had a bright red puddle. Mortified.
Changed myself and sat down.
Stood up to let them out and my always extra long with wings wasn't holding it in.
Big clot on pad, sorry tmi.
Got in bed and mattress is ruined.
Should I be worried or go to sleep?
Those who have seen my other posts will know its been a stressful week and I def don't need anymore hospital visits!

Aweful as it sounds, I don't think it sounds A&E worth it, esp as your Dd has been ill etc.

I often wear 2 pairs of underwear for sleep, each with pad ... should get you some sleep.

See your gp about iron etc and what to do next period if it happens again.

I always had heavy periods but one was so bad I was going through a pad/tampon every 15mins, when I sat down it just fell out of me. I was home alone with 2 kids as OH was working away and phoned my mum. She told me to call 999 but like a dick I didn't listen (didn't want a fuss)

I called NHS direct who asked me to catch some in a bowl or something to take to be tested (I have to be honest I was so woozy I cannot remember what she said) and when I tried it filled a cereal bowl.

I passed out on the toilet and when I came round I was on the floor with blood everywhere. I got up and walked around 5 steps before falling against the propped up loft ladder at the top of our stairs and blacking out again. I came round this time laying at the top of the stairs with a ladder on top of me to a terrified DS on the phone to my mum who was on the other phone to 999. I spent the night in A&E on a drip feeling like an utter twat for scaring my kids - if you are losing a lot of blood then get it sorted x

When I was Peri-menopausal my periods were awful. I leaked all over the place.

HoppinMad · 13/04/2013 00:19

Some women tend to be heavier some months, due to hormones/diet/God knows.

No advice really, just that if blood doesnt seem to reduce within next few days, or clots remain and you feel unwell I would def contact nhs direct team. I started yesterday first time since dc2 and bleeding is pretty excessive, feeling faint and worried about mattress tonight. I leaked onto sofa too Blush luckily it was a chavvy dark chocolate leather one so nobody noticed!
Hope you feel better soon! [Flowers]

If you are suffering because of being sterilised you are eligible for ablation- speak to your gp. I had it done and haven't had a period since June- completely life changing!
Hope you are feeling better today, if not please ring doc!

StairsInTheNight · 13/04/2013 07:29

you can buy an over the counter tablet in boots called Cyclo-F, which is tranexamic acid and helps your blood to clot. You take 3 times a day for up to 4 days. Reduces the flow massively. If its just a 'normal' heavy period it can be a huge help. I wouldnt be able to leave the house without it. And tena lady do a range of pads and disposable knickers which you can wear at night,if you are very heavy they work brilliantly. Hth.

Pixieonthemoor · 13/04/2013 08:40

How are you this morning OP? Has everything stopped off a bit? How are you feeling?

DeskPlanner · 13/04/2013 10:25

Hope your ok op.

Horsemad · 13/04/2013 13:01

Ibuprofen works well in reducing the flow.

Flojobunny · 13/04/2013 13:02

When I first got up it was everywhere but def much more settled than last night. Thankyou for all the reassurance. It's always good to know I am not entirely alone at times of crisis.

It sounds absolutely awful-why do women put up with it??

The only time I ever leaked was at night before I used tampons & the towel moved!

Sometimes I could tell that there was "pooling" in the morning & would hold another pad there to get to the bathroom without incident!

I am menopausal.

I missed a period, then had two in close succession.

Then none for a year, then one, then none since that one-two & a half years ago.

Maybe I have been "lucky"?

Bloody sure that if it was happening to men they wouldn't put up with it with such stoicism!

AnyoneforTurps · 13/04/2013 14:50

Hi OP, glad things are better today. This sort of flooding is quite common but easily treated with progesterone. You can have a Mirena/IUS coil (doesn't matter that you've been sterilised) or take progesterone tablets if you don't fancy a coil. Your GP will be able to help.

My dad has just had to pick the kids up to give them some tea because I feel so rough.
Never had a head ache like it, back awful and sick.
Not been a good week really has it.

Mine are like this every month. To add to the misery, the slight "breakthrough bleed" I'd get during the middle of the month has now turned into a bi-monthly period.

A small tip: take 3 or 4 sheets of toilet paper, fold them together and then into thirds so they're mini pad shaped. "Wedge" the paper between your labia (even if you use tampons). This little "wedge" seems to catch an awful lot of tampon overflow and forms a kind of bridge to a pad so the blood seeps onto it instead of running all over the skin IYSWIM.

I've found that even though the paper gets full with blood, I don't leak and have accidents with underwear/furniture etc.
