Dd [5] has broken her elbow, how can I help her sleep?

Dd broke her elbow at school on Wednesday [thats a whole thread in itself} I am far too tired angry and emotional to get into that one. Anyway, she is in tremendous pain and is only sleeping for about 20 minutes at a time. She is taking the Spanish equivalent of calpol and Junifen but it doesn't seem to be helping much. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Poor thing
No advise though I'm afraid other than getting the arm into a comfortable postion?

MerlinsBeard · 12/05/2006 22:03

Maybe sleep propped up on a pillow(or lots of them) and rest her elbow on another pillow

Would she be better slightly propped up, in a nest of pillows, with pillows under & around her cast? Falling asleep watching a DVD maybe?

Poor her :(

my ds1 broke his leg really badly last year (when 5)... was really difficult for him at first but got much better and easier after first few days. poor her and poor you.

Chances are you could increase her dose of medicine, depending on her weight, speak to your gp or hospital, they will tell you how higher dose you can give.

Thanks, she's well propped up in my bed and last night I actually put a video on for her at about 4 because i just couldn't come up with anything else. She's been asleep for about 30 mins now, so fingers crossed.

Oh, the poor love, do you have any aromatherapy oils, that might help a little.

ds recently come out of plaster broke his leg at school so know how angry you are feeling, ds was in plasrer for total of 15 weeksSadAngry

the doctors gave ds codeine linctus as it makes them drowsy i only gave it to ds to help him sleep, also diclofenac apparently as you arent used to being in a plaster and with the bone brocken the surronding muscles can go in to a spasm the diclofenac helps relax the muscles(this is what caused ds most of the pain)

Hope that helps and hope your dd will feel better soonSmile

lucy5 - my dd also 5 has broke lots of bones, mopre recently both bones in her wrist which needed corrective surgery.
We did this.
we didnt give anyhtin in the day unles she really complained and then in the evening we gave her nurofen and calpol, about 45 minutes after giving this, one of us got into bed with her (in the first few days we layed her arm on a pillow). I expect she will be more scared of the 'thought' of moving it, we didnt 'wrap' our dd up in cotton wool (as much i wanted too!!!) but i found that the first few niights the comfort of one of us being there made all the diffenrence.
Lucy - good luck, what an awful experince it is xxxx

The most helpful thing I was able to do for my dd was hold her good arm in a position where she could suck her thumb, because it was the broken one she normally sucked. The first time I thought of doing this I swear she was asleep in ten seconds. I slept right next to her at first as well, even for naps, to reassure her and me. It was already getting easier in a day or two. Sorry you have to go through it too. Dd made a brilliant recovery.
