Reflux and Crap Paediatrician!

Ok, have ds2 who is 5 months old who has been diagnosed with reflux. Hospital 24 hours with computer down the throat job. He was put on Domperione, baby gaviscon and losec mups 5ml. I put him on and took him off gaviscon before the others started because it made him so so sick - very odd, then even odder, domperidone which is supposed to make the vomiting better, made him produce milk like a fountain - so so much worse than it was with nothing. The paed hasn't even contemplated why this is, just glazed over the issue. The Losec is still in place but gives him the most horrific runny tummy, seriously smelly exploding poos - clean socks, trousers, nappy, vest and top job! I think that is linked but not entirely sure as I am starting to wonder if maybe its something wrong with his stomach, bright yellow smelly water EVERYWHERE!

Having done all that he is still crying and screaming all afternoon most days. The mornings normally are fine, rarely a squeak issued but after 2.30 bottle its horrendous. Can scream for 4 hours straight and often does. The Paed will not listen to me, all he says is, well he isn't screaming now which really really isn't helpful, but he is a man so I guess he wouldn't listen! Not sure what to do now.

Becuase he was so sick with the domperidone, said paed has put him on Erithrmycin 1ml four times a day to have the same effect. I hate him being on antibiotics and all this other medicine, especially when it is cleary hurting his tummy with all the exploding nappies that we have.

He wakes up first thing in the morning (getting earlier and earlier) with the most horrific stink and mess, but it is fairly firm, it then deteriorates from there.

My health visitor said that she thought he could be bored which filled me with fury and horror, but I am now having to admit that I am starting to see a pattern that he is a whole lot easier when there are lots of things and people to look at rather than when its just me, him and ds1. Maybe he is bored? Any ideas? He is entertained most of the time because ds1 is fairly busy and we are out and about, but admittedly he does spend a bit of time in his bouncy chair whilst I run around after ds1. Could this be the problem do you think?

Does anyone have any knowledge on all these drugs, or any ideas as to what I should do?

Does Losec normally give them horrendous tummies or could it be something wrong with his tummy?

Does anyone have an idea what I should do next?

He is the most wonderful boy and smiles and laughs so much when he isn't screaming or crying, I want that all the time, its so horrid to watch.

Please help me?

I really don't know what to say other than dd was lovely in between her awful colic problems. We felt like there was a contented baby in there trying to get out so I understand how you are feeling. It is awful.
But I can't really offer any advice. Dd was given domperidone in case her problem was reflux (also by a crap paed!) but it gave her milky poos. That's all I can offer - sorry.

Just really wanted to sympathise.

what formula is he on? have they considered a milk problem (allergy/intolerance)?

WidgetWB · 12/05/2006 19:56

He is on Aptamil which is supposed to be the best one. Have tried soya, goats milk, thickened ones, you name it, we tried it before resorting to medicine.

gaviscon made dd worse aswell

if he is only screaming at certain times, could he be overfeeding at those feeds?

WidgetWB · 12/05/2006 20:07

that could certainly make sense, he takes 7 oz at 2.30, maybe I should cut that feed back to 5oz and see if it makes a difference? I know that I had to cut that feed very early with ds1 (also had reflux but it didn't hurt him at all, just puked for Britian!). I wonder if that could help. Have also just started adding 'colief' today to see if that works, it didn't today but thats not to say that it won't tomorrow. Interesting that gaviscon made yours worse too - what did you have or do?

I have to go but please don't feel bad. Reflux is so demoralising for parents. I felt really crap when dd had it and then had the joy of my second child having it aswell. It really undermines your confidence.

Don't let it do that to you. You know your child best and if you are still worried, perhaps ask your GP to take a poo sample to test to make sure he's on the right antibs and to make sure there's nothing strange going on.

Good luck.

foxinsocks · 12/05/2006 20:11

gaviscon definitely made her more sick - I think it upset her tummy more

she turned out to have a milk, soya and egg allergy that was complicating matters

the reflux got better once she started walking but both mine still have weak tummies (they are now 5 and 4) and can pretty much throw up at the drop of a hat!

Also, I found that once she started solids, it was easier to reduce her liquid intake and although her reflux didn't improve much at this stage, it became a lot more manageable.

I would try and cut that feed back to see if it makes a difference. Over feeding when they have reflux can really make them scream so maybe try it and see what happens.

Sorry, your ds is having such a hard time. Can't believe the HV and paed's attitudeAngry. Have you tried a hypoallergenic formula?

Check out this website. There is alot of info and support that I found very helpful.

Hope it gets sorted out soon.

WidgetWB · 12/05/2006 20:13

YOU ARE A LEGEND - just to give me an idea of something else to do - thank you so so much. Interesting that yours were soya and milk allergic - so what did you feed them on and did it all stop once you stopped the milk and soya?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 12/05/2006 20:19

only dd was allergic, ds had a temporary milk problem that resolved itself fairly quickly

the reflux resolved on its own (once she was around 1 ish) but once she was put on Nutramigen at 4 months (hypoallergenic formula), she was certainly a lot better (but to be honest, it couldn't have got much worse!)

Go to the GP about his poo and perhaps ask to try a hypoallergenic formula - it can't do any harm to try it and see if it has any effect on him. Just a warning, they taste quite foul so you may need to warm the bottle a bit to take away the taste (if you don't do that now!).

CADS · 12/05/2006 20:20

Widget, both of mine are cow's milk protein intolerant and couldn't even have any hypoallergenic formulas with cow's milk in it. DD went onto neocate and ds onto soya. Although, they continued to spit up a bit, it was alot less acidic and with the help of rantitidine and the usual postitioning tips, they were alot more comfortable and happy.

Off to my GP on Monday then! Thanks so much for all your help and advice. any more advise always welcome from incoming people! Widget
