home help for the elderly

Hello all, could anyone give me a general breakdown of what help if available on the nhs as far as home help for the elderly goes? My granddad is 86 and he's going to need some form of help very soon. He is in hosp at the mo but when he gets out he won't be able to manage on his own. We don't know the first thing about home care or what's available so any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Contact the social workers at the hospital and ask them to help you plan what he will need.
Also speak with the ward staff. They should not be planning to discharge him without any home care unplaced, knowing that he won't manage and will arrange a meeting before he leaves.

It's not the NHS it is your local council and it can vary a lot. But agree contact SW at the hospital.

Hope you have managed to sort something out. My mum had a crisis team when she came out (aged 86 too). They were fantastic and were helping out three times a day for about six weeks until we sorted out care through a care agency. Be warned though if this happens, there was a few weeks overlap of care, and once she was financially assessed we were left with an overpayment.

The hospital social worker will talk you through things and they should ensure that he has a short term care plan in place before he his discharged .
