After another night of him howling in pain with them.

She examined him, watched him walk etc etc and has basically said that she thinks it is restless legs or cramp and has given me some ibuprofen gel to rub on (phramacist wasn't impressed)as he gets soooooo upset with it, I can't get him to swallow any medicene.

She said it definatly wasn't growing pains as he is too young (3.5).

Just thought I'd post as I know someone else mentioned their lo was suffering with this too.

I will where poss give Ds oral ibuprofen instead as the pharmacist was concerned about measuring the amiunt of gel I put on, but in a situation like the other night it will have to be the gel.

Your poor ds. Dd used to suffer badly with her legs at night, and I'm sure it was worst when she was about your ds' age. I always thought it was growing pains. Never heard of there being a minimum age limit!

Have 2 boys - older one had 'growing pains' really badly at around 4ish plus. ds2 - 4 in june has been waking in agony for the last month or two. We give painkillers and I rub their legs - I think a warm hot water bottle can help (psychologically) as well. Hope you don't get too many broken nights. Incidently we def noticed both boys have bad nights after physically demanding days ( lots of scootering/bike riding etc)

I think she said that she was pretty sure it wasn't growing pains because they usually occur during a growth spurt and he hasn't been having one, infact is still in age 2 trousers sometimes LOL.

I am almost certain that it is what I used to suffer with as a child as I cna clearly remember being in alot of pain and not being able to keep my legs still.

I did google restless legs in children a while ago and a study has been done in america and apparantly there can be a genetic link especially if the mother of the child suffered from it aswell.

yes - but not frequently.
I have restless legs at night - they twitch when i'm falling asleep and wake me back up. I also get terrible leg ache. never been for a diagnosis though.

Dd often complains of pains in her legs during the day - especially when walking. I'm never sure whether to believe her, and usually put it down to whinging...

Nutty - pain in the legs can be related to lack of potassium and/or magnesium. Can you give ds a multi vit and mineral?

noddyholder · 12/05/2006 08:23

It can definitely be an imbalance of salts I had sever RL when I was on dialysis as the machine sometimes made the potassium sodium balance out.Give him something salty with a glass if water before bed to test this out HTH

There is a homeopathic treatment for restless legs that I used when pg and have also used on the kids, will look it up for you if you like. Also, look for mineral water with a high magnesium content and give him a glass or two a day.
