Kidney infection? What should we do?

DH thinks he might have a kidney infection. The GP is closed today and I don't know whether he should wait till tomorrow or go to A&E today. He's been feeling tired and generally unwell for a few days. Has diarrhoea, feels sick and has lost his appetite. Has now developed a pain in his side. He used a home test on his urine this morning, which indicated a possibility of kidney issues.

Am not sure how serious a kidney infection is. He'll need antibiotics, won't he?

He is meant to be doing a three-hour journey to my family tomorrow and we are going to a wedding a few days later. He's not going to be well enough if it's his kidneys, is he?

That is good news. Hope he's better soon!

We're back. Nothing showed up on the urine sample at the hospital Confused, but the pain in DH's side is the right place for his kidneys apparently, so he's been given a weeks' course of antibiotics. He's now back in bed.

Thanks everyone for your help and good advice.

'a week's course', I mean.

How is he today?

He feels dreadful! He says he feels really weak and sick. He's drinking lots of water and staying in bed with a hot-water bottle. Am a bit worried, to be honest, but it seems normal to feel very ill with kidney infections and the antibiotics won't have kicked in yet. I just hope he's got the right antibiotics. Will get him back to his GP if he doesn't feel better in a day or two.

My DS1 (who has OCD and general anxiety) is now terrified his father is going to die, so I am trying to reassure him, whilst simultaneously not worrying too much myself.

It's normal to feel very ill with kidney infections, isn't it?

Ahh your poor DH, that does sound quite bad, usually if I have kidney infection the antibiotics kick in quite quickly, I would def get him seen too if he doesn't feel better by tomorrow morning!

Yes, I'll get him to the GP if he's not feeling better by tomorrow. He's had about three antibiotics so far, so it's early days.
