Nits/Lice - does your school take any action?

dd's school appears to be crawling with lice. As a rough estimate, I'd say that around 20% of her class has them at any one time. The school doesn't seem interested in prodding the parents into taking action. What does your school do (if anything)? Thanks much.

It tends to get mentioned on the end of week letter and, if not on there, is always on the letter at the end of each half-term along the lines of "Please take the opportunity over the holidays of checking for /treating head lice so we can start the term nit-free"

Nit nurse(local hairdresser with consent forms signed) in at the start of each term. Letters out when they see someones crawling/parent informs them. Nurse advises how to wet comb.

cc - is your child at a state primary/secondary? Who organises the check at the start of each term (the school or irate parents?!) It sounds as tho' your school nurse gets involved - do the parents seek her advise or does she go along and say "there is a problem here can I help? Sorry to bombard you with questions but v interested (spent 1.5 hours delousing dd this am and am about to embark on my own hair Grin)

state primary, school I imagine arrange with local hairdresser for her to come in one afternoon and she goes through the whole school, sends notes home to the riddled advising to wetcomb, the school nurse visits too weigh kids etc and at the same time you get an earful about wet combingGrin
Best thing for you to do for your dd is always put her hair up, wet comb everytimes shes in the bath and continue till shes in full time employment....sigh...sad but true!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Charliecat. I comb every am over breakfast and then do a full on bugbust if I find anything. she's had her hair bobbed and I tie it back in hideous bunches and spray liberally with teatree conditioner. And still the little critters keep coming!

Just interested to see what other schools do 'cos ours does nowt and I'd like to gather some ideas to put to the PTA/class reps/headmistress. Thanks for your time and help - much appreciated. You too Bettyspaghetti. Smile (PS my hair seems clear. Zipadeedodah!!!!)

schools do very little in my experience
I'm a teacher and we are not even allowed to phone home to inform parents, or put a note in child's diary letting them know. General letters have never been sent out either ( this is a seccondary special school)
makes me v cross as I've had lice a few times from contact with the children
(scratch scratch..)

DD started Pre-School last week and I have already had a general letter home advising us to check hair as healice has been reported. Not sure how they found out but I'm under the impression that parents inform the teachers if their child catches it. Anyway I've been checking DD hair and will certainly "own up" if/when DD gets them!!
